King Diamond is a Danish heavy metal band formed 1985 in Copenhagen by vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Andy LaRocque and Michael Denner, bassist Timi Hansen and drummer Mikkey Dee. The band was formed by Diamond, Denner and Hansen when the three departed from the group Mercyful Fate, which fell apart due to musical differences between King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann. They have released a total of twelve studio albums, plus several live albums, EPs and singles. Their sound is more heavy metal than the Death/Black metal of Merctful fate, and their recordings tend towards concept albums around themes such as "The Eye", the "Puppet Master" and "Haunted Graveyards". Their first album, Fatal Portrait was released in 1986, followed a year later by the band's first concept album Abigail (1987). Three more albums were released before the band was put on hold in the early 1990s, when King Diamond reunited with his former outfit Mercyful Fate. Diamond reformed the band in 1994, and would balance recording and touring with both Mercyful Fate and his eponymous band throughout the 1990s. King Diamond has remained active since then, despite the 13 year gap between 2007's Give Me Your Soul... Please and their most recent studio album 2020's The Institute. Standout albums include Fatal Portrait, Abigail, "Them", Conspiracy, The Eye, The Puppet Master and The Institute. Guitarist Any LaRocque has also made guest appearances with Swedish band Falconer and American band Death. For many metal fans, frontman King Diamond aka Kim Bendix Petersen, is a monumentally important figure in the history of metal, and a core inspiration to bands like Metallica and generations of players.
