Kaija Saariaho was a Finnish composer born 1952 in Helsinki. Her innovative and boundary-pushing works established her as a prominent figure in modern classical music, with a distinctive musical language that combines elements of spectralism, electronic music, and traditional classical forms. Her compositions are characterised by their ethereal beauty, nuanced textures, and profound emotional depth, earning her numerous awards and accolades throughout her illustrious career. Saariaho began her education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied composition with Paavo Heininen and Einojuhani Rautavaara. She later studied in Freiburg, Germany, and Paris, where she lived from 1982. Her research at the IRCAM marked a turning point away from strict serialism towards spectralism. Her characteristically rich, polyphonic textures are often created by combining live music and electronics. One of Saariaho's most acclaimed works, L'Amour de Loin" (Love from Afar), an opera that premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2000, received widespread critical praise for its lush orchestration, inventive use of electronics, and hauntingly beautiful vocal writing. In addition to opera, Saariaho composed a wide range of orchestral, chamber, and vocal works that showcased her unique blend of timbres and textures. Pieces such as "Graal théâtre," "Petals," and "Orion" demonstrate her mastery of colour and form, with shimmering harmonies and intricate rhythms that transport listeners to otherworldly realms. Saariaho's music often explores themes of nature, spirituality, and the human experience, inviting audiences to reflect on the mysteries of existence and the interplay of light and darkness. Saariaho's innovative use of electronic and computer-generated sounds further distinguished her as a pioneer in contemporary music. Works like "Nymphea" and "Ciel d'hiver" seamlessly integrate acoustic instruments with electronic textures, creating immersive sonic landscapes. Saariaho received numerous awards, including the prestigious Polar Music Prize and the UNESCO International Music Prize. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, reflecting her global influence and stature in the world of classical music. During the course of her career, Saariaho received commissions from the Lincoln Centre for the Kronos Quartet and from IRCAM for the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the BBC, the New York Philharmonic, the Salzburg Music Festival, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and the Finnish National Opera. In a 2019 composers' poll by BBC Music Magazine, Saariaho was ranked the greatest living composer. Standout recordings of her compositions include L'amour de loin [w/ Kent Negaro] (2009), Graal Theatre [w/ Esa-Pekka Salonen] (2001), Verblendungen [Esa-Pekka Salonen] (1985), Chamber Music [Wolpe Trio] (2023), Du Cristal a la fumee [Esa-Pekka Salonen] (1993), and Cloud Music [Anu Komsi] (1999).
