The Human Menagerie (1973) is the confident, deeply eccentric debut album by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. Operating at the far theatrical end of the 1970s glam rock spectrum, the record pairs Harley’s highly affected, decadent vocal delivery with lush, baroque pop and orchestral arrangements. Rather than leaning on heavy electric guitar riffs like their contemporaries, the band carved out a completely unique lane using violins, keyboards, and dark cabaret aesthetics.
