Recorded live during a radio broadcast at A&R Recording Studios in New York City on 17 November 1970, this album strips away the lush orchestral arrangements of his early studio records. Instead, it presents an aggressive, heavily rhythmic trio format consisting only of Elton's pounding piano, Dee Murray’s melodic bass, and Nigel Olsson’s explosive drumming.
