Released in May 1970, In the Wake of Poseidon is often described by critics as a "twin brother" or "mirror" to King Crimson's seminal debut, In the Court of the Crimson King. While it remains a fan favourite and achieved the band's highest UK chart position at No. 4, it is frequently scrutinised for its structural similarities to its predecessor. Many critics note that the album follows the debut's formula almost exactly: a heavy, jazz-inflected opener ("Pictures of a City"), a delicate flute ballad ("Cadence and Cascade"), and a sweeping Mellotron epic (the title track). Some reviewers argue it is actually better produced and "cleaner" than the debut, benefiting from Robert Fripp's increased confidence in the studio.
