Released in December 1970, Lizard is King Crimson's third studio album and remains one of the most divisive and stylistically unique entries in their discography. Following the departure of key members, Robert Fripp assembled a transitional lineup that pushed the band's sound away from the symphonic rock of their debut and into a dense, avant-garde fusion of free jazz and classical music. Unlike the "Mellotron-heavy" sound of previous albums, Lizard is heavily jazz-inflected, featuring complex horn arrangements and the frantic, improvisational piano work of guest Keith Tippett. This was the only studio album to feature Gordon Haskell on bass and lead vocals and Andy McCulloch on drums. Neither remained with the band long enough to tour the material.
