Released on 6 October 1974, Red is widely considered King Crimson’s emotional and sonic magnum opus. Recorded by the core trio of Robert Fripp, John Wetton, and Bill Bruford just before Fripp disbanded the group, the album is a dark, heavy, and visceral departure from the pastoral sounds of their debut. Critics often describe Red as a "clearly defined jumping off point" for avant-garde metal and math rock. Frequently ranked among the top two King Crimson albums alongside their debut, In the Court of the Crimson King. Tone: Dark, brooding, and "bone-crushing". Influence: Cited as a major influence by artists like Kurt Cobain and Tool.
