Released in 1974, Miles Davis's Big Fun is often viewed as a dense, challenging cornerstone of his electric period. Primarily a compilation of outtakes from the Bitches Brew, A Tribute to Jack Johnson, and On the Corner sessions, it features four sprawling, side-long tracks that explore avant-garde jazz fusion and heavy Indian instrumentation. Upon its release, Big Fun received generally weak reviews as critics and the market were shifting toward shorter disco and pop-oriented tracks. Today, many fans and critics view it as a "must-have" for lovers of Davis's early '70s work, often finding it as rewarding—and sometimes more engaging—than Bitches Brew.
