Status Quo's debut album, Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo (1968), captures the band in a brief, experimental phase far removed from the "heads-down" boogie rock that later defined them. It is widely regarded as a charming, if somewhat derivative, exercise in 1960s psychedelia and pop. The album is heavily influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the Bee Gees and Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles. Critics often note the "heavy overuse" of phased guitars and vocals, a hallmark of the era that some find imaginative and others find tiresome. While distinct from their later work, traces of their future rhythm section can be heard in the bass lines.
