Pawn Hearts is the critically acclaimed fourth album by the English progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator, known for its dark themes, intense sound, and the side-long suite "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers". It is considered by many fans and critics to be a classic of the progressive rock genre. Released in October 1971 on Charisma Records, the original album features only three tracks. It was not a commercial success in the UK but surprisingly reached number one on the album charts in Italy, where the band experienced immense popularity. The album is characterized by complex arrangements, extended instrumental passages, and the distinctive, passionate vocals of frontman Peter Hammill. The music features minimal use of guitars, instead relying heavily on Hugh Banton's organ and David Jackson's saxophones, creating a unique and often abrasive sound. Guest guitarist Robert Fripp of King Crimson also makes an appearance.
