The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) is widely considered one of the most influential albums in rock history, famously described by Brian Eno as a record that "only sold 30,000 copies," but prompted "everyone who bought one... to start a band". Initially a commercial failure largely ignored by 1967's mainstream "Summer of Love" culture, it has since been canonised as the definitive art-rock debut. Managed and "produced" by pop artist Andy Warhol, the album is iconic for its "banana" cover art, which originally featured a "peel slowly and see" sticker. At Warhol's insistence, German singer Nico was added to the band, providing a haunting, "chanteuse" contrast to Lou Reed's gritty vocals on three key tracks.
Velvet Underground's seminal debut album Velvet Underground & Nico released in 1967 on Verve Records has a cover designed by Andy Warhol with a peel-off sticker of a banana overlayed on an image of a pink banana.
