Gainsbourg was initially a cabaret singer but his musical scope expanded to incorporate rock'n'roll, electronica, disco, new wave and reggae. Regarded as one of the most important figures in French pop, He was always the musical innovator and became one of France's most revered musicians. His lyrical works incorporated wordplay, with humorous, bizarre, provocative, sexual, satirical or subversive overtones. Gainsbourg wrote over 550 songs, which have been covered more than 1,000 times by diverse artists. Born the son of Ukrainian Jewish migrants who fled to Paris after the 1917 Russian Revolution, Gainsbourg's childhood was profoundly affected by the occupation of France by Germany during WWII. The identifying yellow star that Jews were required to wear haunted Gainsbourg and in later years he was able to transmute this memory into creative inspiration. After attending art schools in Paris, young Gainsbourg was conscripted to the Army for 12 months where, in his own words, he spent the time playing dirty songs on his guitar, visiting prostitutes and drinking, later admitting that the service made him an alcoholic. Later he earned a living working odd jobs and as a piano player in bars, soon becoming the venue pianist at the drag cabaret club Madame Arthur. Gainsbourg had a revelation when he saw Boris Vian at the Milord l'Arsouille club, whose provocative and humorous songs would influence his own compositions. By 1957 Gainsbourg was accompanying singer and club star Michèle Arnaud on the guitar, and soon was performing his own repertoire, despite suffering from stage fright. His debut album, Du chant à la une! was recorded in 1958, backed by arranger Alain Gorageur and his orchestra, beginning a fruitful collaboration. Upon release it was a commercial and critical failure, despite winning the grand prize at L'Academie Charles Cross and the praise of Boris Vian, who compared him to Cole Porter. His first commercial success came in 1960 with his single "L'Eau à la bouche", the title song from the film of the same name. His third LP L'Étonnant Serge Gainsbourg (1961) included one of his best known songs from this period "La Chanson de Prévert." Despite initially mocking yé-yé, a style of French pop typically sung by young female singers, Gainsbourg would soon become one of its most important figures after writing a string of hits for artists like Brigitte Bardot, Petula Clark and France Gall. In terms of his own recordings, Gainsbourg's masterpiece is 1971's Histoire de Melody Nelson, with orchestration by Jean-Claude Vannier. Other outstanding albums include No.4 (1962), Confidentiel (1964), Initials B.B (1968), Jane Birkin et Serge Gainsbourg (1969), L'homme à tête de chou (1976), and Gainsbourg Live (1986). Other albums worth investigating are Aux armes et cætera (1979) which was recorded with Bob Marley and the Wailers, and the excellent compilations Bonnie and Clyde (1968), Comic Strip (1996), and Initials S.G. (2003). One of the artist's most infamous songs comes with an interesting story. In 1967 Gainsbourg had a brief but ardent love affair with glamorous actress Brigitte Bardot. One day she asked him to write the most beautiful love song he could imagine and, that night, he wrote the duet "Je t'aime...moi non plus" for her. The erotic yet cynical "Je t'aime", describing the hopelessness of physical love, was recorded by the pair in a small glass booth in Paris but after Bardot's husband, German businessman Gunter Sachs, became aware of the recording, he demanded it be withdrawn. Gainsbourg, who smoked five packs of unfiltered Gitanes cigarettes a day, died from a heart attack at his home on 2 March 1991, aged 62. He was buried in the Jewish section of the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris. French President François Mitterand paid tribute by saying, "He was our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire... He elevated the song to the level of art."

Artist Website: gainsbourg.net

Featured Albums: Serge Gainsbourg

Related Artists: Jean-Claude Vannier, Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Michel Colombier

Collections: Music Visionaries

Thomas Earl Petty was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor born 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. He was the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in 1976, a successful solo musician, and part of the mega-star combo The Traveling Wilburys. With a distinctive vocal and guitar sound, his Americana influenced style saw him become one of the most popular rock musicians of his era. Petty's interest in rock and roll music began at age ten when he had an opportunity to meet Elvis Presley. In the summer of 1961, his uncle was working on the set of Presley's film Follow That Dream, in nearby Ocala, and invited Petty to watch the movie's filming. Petty instantly became a Presley fan, trading his Wham-O slingshot for a collection of Elvis 45s. He also wanted to be in a band the moment he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Growing up, Petty worked as a gardener at the University of Florida, then briefly as a gravedigger. In 1976 Petty started a band known as the Epics, which later evolved into Mudcrutch. The band included future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and was popular in Gainesville. After Mudcrutch folded, Petty pursued a solo career and Tench formed his own group, whose sound Petty admired. Eventually, Petty and Campbell collaborated with Tench, Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, forming the first lineup of the Heartbreakers. Their eponymous debut album gained little popularity among American audiences, achieving greater success in Britan. The singles "American Girl" and "Breakdown" peaked at No. 40 after the band toured the UK in support of Nils Lofgren. Their second album, You're Gonna Get It!, was the band's first Top 40 album, featuring the singles "I Need to Know" and "Listen to Her Heart". Their third album, Damn the Torpedoes, quickly went platinum, selling nearly two million copies; it includes their breakthrough singles "Don't Do Me Like That", "Here Comes My Girl", "Even the Losers" and "Refugee". He went on to make 17 studio albums, most credited to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty died on October 2nd 2017 at the age of 66 from an accidental drug overdose. Petty was suffering from various painful ailments prompting his overuse of opiod painkillers. In 2002, Petty appeared on The Simpsons in the episode "How I Spent My Strummer Vacation", along with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, and Brian Setzer. In it, he spoofed himself as a tutor to Homer Simpson on the art of lyric writing, composing a brief song about a drunk girl driving down the road while concerned with the state of public schools.

Artist Website: tompetty.com

Featured Albums: Tom Petty

Related Artists: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Traveling Wilburys

Serge Gainsbourg "Histoire de Melody Nelson"

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Mercury, France, 2016, 0600753718377, Remastered, 180g Vinyl, Incl. Traffic signed with Island Records and very quickly solidified their unique psych-folk-rock sound and issued a string of classic singles, "Paper Sun", "Hole in my Shoe" and "Here we go Round the Mulberry Bush", which was the theme song for a movie of the same name. Glass's work has been described as minimalism, having similar qualities to composers such as La Monte Young, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century. Glass was born to Ida and Benjamin Glass, who were Latvian and Russian-Jewish emigrants. His father owned a record store and his mother was a librarian. In his memoir, Glass recalls that at the end of World War II his mother aided Jewish Holocaust survivors, inviting recent arrivals to America to stay at their home until they could find a job and a place to live. Philip developed his appreciation of music from his father, discovering later his father's family had many musicians. His cousin Cevia was a classical pianist, while others had been in vaudeville. He learned his family was also related to Al Jolson. Glass studied the flute as a child at the Peabody Institute of Music, then at the age of 15 entered an accelerated college program at the University of Chicago where he studied mathematics and philosophy. He progressed to the Juilliard School of Music where the keyboard was his main instrument. Fellow students included Steve Reich and Peter Schickele. In 1964, Glass received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Paris with the eminent composition teacher Nadia Boulanger, from 1964-1966. In 1968 Glass founded the Philip Glass Ensemble, which is still in existence, but Glass no longer performs with the ensemble. Over the course of his career Glass has written 15 operas, numerous chamber operas and musical theatre works, 14 symphonies, 12 concertos, nine string quartets, various other chamber music pieces, and many film scores. Three of his film scores received Academy Award nominations: Martin Scorsese's Kundun (1997), Stephen Daldry's The Hours (2002), and Richard Eyre's Notes on a Scandal (2006). He also composed the scores for Mishima (1985), Hamburger Hill (1987), The Thin Blue Line (1988), The Truman Show (1998), and The Illusionist (2006). Glass is also known for his modern operas such as Einstein on the Beach (1976), Satyagraha (1980), Akhnaten (1983), The Voyage (1992), and The Perfect American (2013). And he wrote the scores for Broadway productions such as the revivals of The Elephant Man (2002), The Crucible (2016), and King Lear (2019). Many of Glass' works have been recorded, including performances by Glass himself on keyboards. Outstanding albums include Glassworks (1982), Koyaanisqatsi (1983), The Photographer (1983), Mishima (1985), Satyagraha (1985), Akhnaten (1987), Solo Piano (1989), Einstein on the Beach (1993), The Music of Candyman (2001), and The Hours (2002). When Glass was a youngster, his father's record store developed a reputation as Baltimore's leading source of modern music. Philip built a sizable record collection from unsold records, including modern classical music such as Hindemith, Bartók, Schoenberg, Shostakovich and Western classical music including Beethoven's string quartets and Schubert's B♭ Piano Trio. Glass has stated that Franz Schubert, with whom he shares a birthday, is his favorite composer. Philip Glass is one of the most influential living composers, being one of the first composers to win a wide, multigenerational audience in the opera house, the concert hall, the dance world, in film, and in popular music.

Artist Website: philipglass.com

Featured Albums: Philip Glass

Related Artists: The Philip Glass Ensemble, Michael Riesman, Kronos Quartet

Collections: Music Visionaries

Michael Gordon Oldfield is an English multi-instrumentalist and composer born 1953 in Reading, UK. In 1973 he was catapulted to fame with his very first recording, the iconic Tubular Bells. He went on to create a series of works that established him as one of the UK's leading progressive rock musicians, blending progressive rock with world, folk, classical, electronic, ambient, and new-age music. Oldfield took up the guitar aged ten, first learning on a 6-string acoustic by copying parts from songs by folk guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. By the time he was 12, Oldfield played electric guitar and performed in local folk and youth clubs and dances. After leaving school Oldfield and his sister Sally formed a folk duo The Sallyangie. They toured England and Paris and recorded one album, Children of the Sun (1969). In 1970 Oldfield became the bass player for ex Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers' group Whole Wide World. He played on Ayers's albums Shooting at the Moon (1970) and Whatevershebringswesing (1971). Both albums were recorded at Abbey Road Studios, where Oldfield familiarised himself with record production plus a variety of instruments, such as orchestral percussion, piano, Mellotron and harpsichord. By mid-1971, he had assembled a demo tape containing sections of a longform instrumental that became "Tubular Bells (Part One)", initially entitled "Opus One". While doing session work at The Manor Studio in Oxfordshire, owned by businessman Richard Branson, he met engineers Tom Newman and Simon Heyworth who played the tapes to Branson. Branson and Draper gave Oldfield one week of recording time at The Manor, during which he completed "Part One" of Tubular Bells. By the end of January 1973, Branson agreed to release Tubular Bells and secured Oldfield with a six-album deal. Tubular Bells was released on 25 May 1973 as the first album on the Virgin label. Oldfield played more than twenty different instruments in the multi-layered recording. Its 2.6 million UK sales puts it at No. 34 on the list of the best-selling albums in the country. The title track became a top 10 hit single in the US after the opening was used in The Exorcist film in 1973. It is today considered to be a forerunner of the new-age music movement. Oldfield has to-date released 32 studio albums including collaborations and film soundtracks. Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd in 1965 along with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright. Barrett was the lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter in Floyd's early years, and was central to the creation of their first masterpiece album Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), as well as the singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play, which are part of the foundation of UK psychedelic music. Born into a comfortable middle-class family, Syd was the fourth of five children, and his father Arthur was a prominent pathologist. Syd bought his first electric guitar at age 15 and built his own amplifier. At one point at Morley Memorial Junior School, Barrett was taught by the mother of future Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters, and later he attended Cambridgeshire High School for Boys with Waters. Later, while a student at the art department of the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, Barrett met David Gilmour. In 1965, Barrett joined Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and guitarist Bob Klose, who were then called the Tea Set. When they found themselves playing a gig with a Dutch band called Tee Set, Barrett came up with the Pink Floyd Sound, later shortened to Pink Floyd. Syd was replaced by David Gilmour during the recording of the second Floyd album, due to his mental health deterioration triggered by the excessive use of LSD. Whereas Barrett had been the primary songwriter on 'Piper', on A Saucerful of Secrets (1968) each member contributed songwriting and lead vocals. Gilmour appeared on all but two songs, while Barrett contributed to three. Syd recorded two solo albums; The Madcap Laughs (1970) is a quirky masterpiece of psychedelia, and Barrett (1970), which is also good but not as coherent a work. There have also been many fine compilations including The Best of Syd Barrett - Wouldn't You Miss Me? (2001), and An Introduction to Syd Barrett (2010). Barrett was known for his whimsical style of psychedelia, English-accented singing, and stream of consciousness writing style. As a guitarist, he was influential for his free-form playing and for employing effects such as dissonance, distortion, echo and feedback. Originally trained as a painter, Barrett was musically active for less than ten years. In 1972, he left the music industry, retired from public life and strictly guarded his privacy until his death. He continued painting and dedicated himself to gardening. Pink Floyd recorded several tributes and homages to him, including the 1975 song suite "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and the 1979 rock opera The Wall. In 1988, EMI released an album of unreleased tracks and outtakes, Opel, with Barrett's approval. In 1996, Barrett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pink Floyd. Cale was a founding member of the Velvet Underground along with Lou Reed, both coming from a proto-Punk band called The Primitives. Cale is a classically trained Viola player as well as one of the early practitioners of avant-garde minimalism in rock music. He produced many seminal albums for artists such as Patti Smith, Nico, The Stooges, Squeeze and Nick Drake. He has also collaborated with artists such as Chris Spedding, Nico, Brian Eno, Lou Reed and Terry Riley. Coming from humble beginnings in a small Welsh mining village, the son of a coal miner father and primary school teacher mother, Cale enjoyed and followed rock music as well as avant-garde and European art music from a young age. A talent for viola saw Cale join the National Youth Orchestra of Wales at age 13, then upon winning a scholarship, he studied music at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Whilst there he organised an early Fluxus concert and had two scores published in Fluxus Preview Review for the nascent avant-garde collective. He conducted the first performance in the UK of Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra, with the composer and pianist Michael Garrett as soloist. In 1963, he travelled to the United States to continue his musical training with the assistance and influence of Aaron Copland whom recommended him for Tanglewood. In New York he met John Cage and performed as part of La Monte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music. Despite his background in art music and the avant-garde, Cale also enjoyed rock music. In 1965 he co-founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed, recruiting his flatmate Angus MacLise and Reed's college friend Sterling Morrison to complete the initial line-up. Cale was central to VU's sound on their first two seminal albums; Velvet Underground & Nico, and White Light/White Heat. He also rejoined the band in 1992 for the reunion performances and recording Live MCMXCIII. Although Cale was forced out of VU by Reed, the pair would later collaborate on the Andy Warhol dedication Songs for Drella (1990). After leaving the Velvet Underground, Cale worked as a record producer and arranger on a number of studio albums, most notably the Stooges' highly influential 1969 self-titled debut and a trilogy by Nico; The Marble Index (1968), Desertshore (1970) and The End (1974). On these he accompanied Nico playing a wide array of instruments. He also met Nick Drake at this time and insisted on collaborating with the fledgling artist. He appeared on Drake's second studio album, Bryter Later (1971), playing viola and harpsichord on "Fly" and piano, organ, and celesta on "Northern Sky". Cale also worked extensively with guitar supremo Chris Spedding on many of his best solo works. Outstanding Cale solo albums include Vintage Violence (1970), The Academy in Peril (1972), Fear (1974), Slow Dazzle (1975), Helen of Troy (1975), Music for a New Society (1982), Fragments of a Rainy Season (1992), Hobo Sapiens (2003), Black Acetate (2005), Mercy (2023), POPtical Illusion (2024) and the early masterpiece Paris 1919 (1973). Initially associated with the punk scene, the band rapidly evolved to create a form of post-punk music full of rhythmic and sonic experimentation. They have been widely influential, both over their contemporaries and with later acts such as Joy Division, the Cure, the Smiths, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey and Radiohead. Siouxsie and Severin met at early Sex Pistols gigs. When one of the bands scheduled to play the 100 Club Punk Festival, organised by Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, pulled out at the last minute, Siouxsie suggested that she and Severin play, even though they had no band name or additional members. Two days later on the 20th Sept 1976 the pair appeared at the festival with two borrowed musicians, Marco Pirroni on guitar and John Simon Ritchie aka Sid Vicious on drums. Their set consisted of a 20-minute improvisation based on "The Lord's Prayer". After a few months practice and new members Kenny Morris (drums) and John McKay (guitar) the group made their first live television appearance on Tony Wilson's show So it Goes. Soon after they recorded their first John Peel session for BBC radio and appeared on the front cover of UK weekly Sounds magazine. Their first single, "Hong Kong Garden" reached the top 10 in the UK and their excellent debut album The Scream, released in November 1978, attracted critical praise. Here was the beginnings of a post-punk sound of jagged guitars, melodic bass-line and spatial drums, orchestrated by the expert production of Steve Lillywhite. Morris and McKay quit after the first album and Budgie, formerly drummer with The Slits, was recruited along with Robert Smith of The Cure as a fill-in guitarist. When former Magazine guitarist John McGeoch joined, Smith returned to The Cure but would again play with the Banshees during 1982-84. With their lineup settled, the band went on to record a string of superb albums: Kaleidoscope ('80), Juju ('81), A Kiss in the Dreamhouse ('82), Nocturne ('83) and Tinderbox ('86). He was the lead guitarist, singer and principal songwriter with the Velvet Underground after which he had a successful solo career spanning five decades. Having played guitar and sung in doo-wop groups in high school, Reed studied poetry at Syracuse University under Delmore Schwartz, and served as a radio DJ hosting a late-night Avant-garde program while at college. After graduating from Syracuse, he went to work for low-budget record company Pickwick Records in New York City, where he met fellow session player John Cale. Together with Sterling Morrison and Angus MacLise, Reed and Cale formed the Velvet Underground in 1965. After building a reputation on the avant garde music scene they gained the attention of Andy Warhol, who became the band's manager. When Cale departed the band after their second album, Velvet Underground effectively became Reed's backing band, with Reed as vocalist, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter, as well as it's iconic front-man, projecting the band's louche, arty-druggy, anti-establishment and sexually ambiguous image. After leaving the VU, Reed would go on to a much more commercially successful solo career, releasing twenty studio albums. His second, Transformer (1972), produced by David Bowie and arranged by Mick Ronson, brought him mainstream recognition. Transformer is a rock masterpiece containing the hit song "Walk on the Wild Side". This one song with its autobiographical subject matter summed up Reed's life and muse in a succinct 4.12 minutes of cool lounge-jazz, with signature bass-work by veteran Herbie Flowers. Reed's third solo album was the superb Berlin from the following year. Of all his albums, this emotionally gut-wrenching masterpiece demonstrates Reed's credentials as a songwriter and performer who could produce timeless and powerful works created from his own real-life experiences. After the catharsis of Berlin, Reed moved to more mainstream rock-n-roll based material. Outstanding later albums include Rock n Roll Animal (1974), Coney Island Baby (1975), Street Hassle (1978), The Blue Mask (1982), New York (1989), and Magic and Loss (1992). Reed also collaborated with John Cale on the excellent Songs for Drella (1990) in memory of Andy Warhol. Perhaps Reed's most controversial work was the 1975 double album Metal Machine Music, which is an hour of modulated feedback and guitar effects. Described by Rolling Stone as the "tubular groaning of a galactic refrigerator", many critics saw it as a gesture of contempt, an attempt to break his contract with RCA or to alienate his "pop" fans. Reed claimed that the album was a genuine artistic effort inspired by the drone music of La Monte Young. Reed also contributed music to two theatrical interpretations of 19th-century writers, one of which he developed into an album titled The Raven. He married his third wife Laurie Anderson in 2008, and recorded the collaboration album Lulu with Metallica. He died in 2013 of liver disease. Reed has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Velvet Underground in 1996 and as a solo act in 2015.

Artist Website: loureed.com

Featured Albums: Lou Reed

Related Artists: Velvet Underground, John Cale, Reed & Cale, Laurie Anderson

Lou Reed "Transformer"

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, RCA Sony, Europe, 2016, 88985349031, Reissue, Remastered

Artist Website: loureed.com

More by Artist: Lou Reed

Related Artists: Velvet Underground, John Cale, Reed & Cale, Laurie Anderson

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1712/4551/products/artrockstore-lou-reed-transformer-album.jpg?v=1683164941
lou-reed-lou-reed-live-album-artrockstore
Lou Reed | Lou Reed Live | Album

Artist Website: loureed.com

More by Artist: Lou Reed

Related Artists: Velvet Underground, John Cale, Reed & Cale, Laurie Anderson

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1712/4551/products/artrockstore-lou-reed-lou-reed-live-album.jpg?v=1683164942
steve-hillage-artrockstore
Steve Hillage | Artist

Stephen Simpson Hillage is an English guitarist born 1951 in Chingford, London. A child prodigy and blind at birth, Wonder is considered to be one of the most critically and commercially successful musical performers of the late 20th century. At age 11 Morris auditioned for Motown his own composition "Lonely Boy" and CEO Berry Gordy signed him up to the Tamla Label where he was dubbed Little Stevie Wonder. By the next year he was added to the travelling Motown Review and performed alongside artists like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes. Wonder recorded eight albums between 1962-71 which contained great singles, but were patchy overall. Additional long-term members are Martin Cooper (keyboards, saxophone) and Malcolm Holmes (drums), who both joined in 1980. The band emerged in the late 1970s and quickly became synonymous with the synth-pop movement. OMD's innovative fusion of experimental minimalist electronic soundscapes, catchy melodies, and thought-provoking lyrics has solidified their status as influential pioneers in the realm of popular music. The band's early years saw them experiment with DIY electronic instruments, incorporating them into their music to create a distinctive and futuristic sound. Their breakthrough came with the release of their debut single, "Electricity" in 1979, which showcased a unique blend of catchy pop hooks and electronic textures. This was followed by their self-titled debut album, which garnered critical acclaim and laid the groundwork for their future success. OMD achieved widespread recognition with their 1980 album Organisation which featured the hit single "Enola Gay." The song's infectious melody and melancholic yet danceable synth-pop sound catapulted OMD into the international spotlight, earning them a devoted following and establishing them as one of the leading acts in the burgeoning synth-pop genre. Throughout the 1980s, OMD continued to release a string of successful albums, including Architecture & Morality (1981) and Dazzle Ships (1983), both of which showcased the band's willingness to experiment with avant-garde sounds and unconventional song structures. Architecture & Morality in particular, is regarded as a seminal work in the synth-pop genre, featuring iconic tracks such as "Joan of Arc" and "Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc)." OMD's music often delved into themes of technology, human emotions, and societal concerns, reflecting the band members' keen interest in the intersection of art and technology. Their ability to infuse their music with introspective lyrics and infectious melodies set them apart from their contemporaries, earning them a reputation for creating intelligent, emotionally resonant pop music. After a hiatus in the 1990s, OMD returned in the early 2000s, releasing new material and embarking on successful tours that reaffirmed their enduring appeal. Their 2010 album History of Modern marked a triumphant return to form, showcasing a modernised sound that retained the band's signature style while appealing to a new generation of fans. Of their 14 studio albums the first five: OMD (1980), Organisation (1980), Architecture & Morality (1981), Dazzle Ships (1983), Junk Culture (1984) and Crush (1955) are highly recommended. After several sub-par releases, the band rebounded with four strong late-career albums, namely: History of Modern (2010), English Electric (2013), The Punishment of Luxury (2017), and Bauhaus Staircase (2023). In 1990 Humphreys, Cooper and Holmes formed the spinoff group The Listening Pool, releasing one excellent album Still Life (1994). In interviews, founders Andy McClusky and Paul Humphreys speak of their early love of electronic music, and acknowledge the influence of German bands Kraftwerk and Neu!. Don Felder (guitar, vocals, banjo, mandolin, pedal steel guitar) replaced Bernie Leadon in 1975, Joe Walsh (guitar, keyboards, vocals) came aboard in 1976, and Timothy B. Schmit (bass, vocals) replaced Randy Meisner in 1977. With five number one singles, six number one albums, six Grammy Awards, and five American Music Awards, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America. The band started out when Frey, Henley, Leadon and Meisner were recruited by Linda Ronstadt as band members, some touring with her, and all playing on her third solo album, before venturing out on their own on David Geffen's new Asylum Records label. All the members had previously played in country rock outfits, Henley in the Shilohs, Meisner with Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band and Poco, Leadon with the Flying Burrito Bros, Schmit with Poco and lastly, Joe Walsh with the James Gang and as a solo artist in his own right. As recording artists, the Eagles are one of the world's best selling bands, having sold more than 200 million records, including 100 million sold in U.S alone. The instigator was Dickie Peterson, who had previously been with the band the Oxford Circle along with Paul Whaley and future Blue Cheer member Gary Lee Yoder. The founding trio lasted three years, after which the lineup underwent constant changes, including several reunions. Other notable players to pass through the ranks were guitarist/vocalist Randy Holden, drummer Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix Experience), bassist Nick St. Nicholas (Steppenwolf), guitarist Gary Lee Yoder (Oxford Circle, Kak), and drummer Prairie Prince (The Tubes). Many rock aficionados regard Blue Cheer as the first Heavy Metal band, based on their power trio riff-based attack and sheer volume. For a time Blue Cheer earned the distinction of "World's Loudest Band", thanks to their wall of Marshall amps. That distinction passed to Deep Purple when they were at their peak. At a 1968 concert the band was so loud that within just a few songs, much of the crowd in the front section was fleeing the hall. The band was managed by Allen "Gut" Terk, a former member of the Hells Angels who decided that the line-up should be a power trio configuration after seeing Jimi Hendrix perform at the Monterey Pop Festival. Blue Cheer's debut album, Vincebus Eruptum released in 1968, is considered a seminal work in the development of heavy metal. The album featured their iconic cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," which became their most well-known song. In their latter years, from 1989 to 1993, the band toured mainly in Europe, playing with classic rock acts: Mountain, Outlaws, Thunder, The Groundhogs, Ten Years After, Mucky Pup, Biohazard and others. Outstanding Blue Cheer albums include the classic first two, both from 1968; Vincebus Eruptum and Outsideinside, followed by the lesser releases New! Improved! Blue Cheer (1969) and The Original Human Being (1970). The compilation albums Louder Than God: The Best of Blue Cheer (1986), and Good Times Are So Hard to Find: The History of Blue Cheer (1988) come highly recommended, as does the 2012 archival release 7. Dickie Peterson released the excellent Child of Darkness solo album in 1997, and Randy Holden released some fine albums after his Blue Cheer days. Gary Lee Yoder, together with Dehner Patten from Oxford Circle, formed the band Kak and released one excellent self-titled album in 1969. Author Tim Hills in his book "The Many Lives of the Crystal Ballroom" describes Blue Cheer as "the epitome of San Francisco psychedelia". Jim Morrison of The Doors characterized the group as "the single most powerful band I've ever seen", and Eric Clapton defined them as "probably the originators of heavy metal". The name "Blue Cheer" was originally a laundry detergent and then a type of LSD created by Owsley Stanley.

Artist Website: wikipedia/Blue_Cheer

Featured Albums: Blue Cheer

Related Artists: Randy Holden, Oxford Circle, Kak

Blondie "Plastic Letters"

LP NEW - Vinyl, Chrysalis, Europe, 2015, 5355033, 600753550335, 180g Vinyl, Reissue

Plastic Letters is the second studio album by the American rock band Blondie, released in February 1978. Winston Rodney OD has worked under the stage name Burning Spear since the trio dissolved after recording their masterpiece 1975 album Marcus Garvey produced by Jack Ruby. Rodney is a committed Rastafarian and one of the most influential and long-standing roots artists in Jamaican reggae. Rodney was born in Saint Ann's Bay, Saint Ann, Jamaica, the same town as Bob Marley. As a young man he listened to the R&B, soul and jazz music transmitted by the US radio stations whose broadcasts reached Jamaica. Curtis Mayfield is cited by Rodney as a major US musical influence along with James Brown. Rodney was deeply influenced as a young man by the views of the political activist Marcus Garvey, especially with regard to the exploration of the themes of Pan-Africanism and self-determination. In 1969, Bob Marley, who was his friend from Saint Ann, advised Rodney to approach Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label after Rodney sought his advice about how to get started. Rodney and Rupert Willington auditioned for Dodd as a duo in 1969 which led to the release of their debut single "Door Peep". They were then joined by tenor Delroy Hinds, and the trio recorded several more singles for Dodd, and two albums, before they moved on to work with Jack Ruby in 1975. Their first recording with Ruby, "Marcus Garvey", was intended as an exclusive track for Ruby's Ocho Rios–based Hi-Power sound system, but was released as a single, giving them an immediate hit, and was followed by "Slavery Days". These recordings featured the backing band The Black Disciples, which included Earl "Chinna" Smith, Valentine Chin, Robbie Shakespeare and Leroy Wallace. The group worked with Ruby on their third album, Marcus Garvey (1975), which was immediately successful and led to a deal with Island Records to give the album a wider release. Further releases followed on Island including Garvey's Ghost, a dub version of the Marcus Garvey album, and Man in the Hills. In late 1976, Rodney split from both Ruby and group members Willington and Hinds, and from that point on used the name Burning Spear for himself alone. Tghe album Dry and Heavy followed in 1977, self-produced but still on Island, and with a sizeable following by now in the United Kingdom. Rodney and his producer wife Sonia established their own label Burning Music Records which gave them creative control over their extensive recorded output. Outstanding albums include Studio One Presents Burning Spear (1973), Rocking Time (1974), Marcus Garvey (1975), Man in The Hills (1976), Dry & Heavy (1977), Marcus' Children (1978) (re-released as Social Living), Hail H.I.M. (1980) and the live album Live (1977). Burning Spear has won two Grammy Awards for Best Reggae Album; one at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 for Calling Rastafari, and one for 2009's Jah Is Real. Between 1970-76 Mitchell delivered six masterpiece albums in succession; Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, For The Roses, Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira. Around 1975, Mitchell's vocal range began to shift and she began exploring more rhythmically complex jazz influenced music. She began working closely with noted jazz musicians, among them Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, as well as Charles Mingus, who asked her to collaborate on his final recordings. Mitchell's approach to music struck a chord with many female listeners. In an era dominated by the stereotypical male rock star, she presented herself as wilful and independent, yet complex and conflicted, endearing her to legions of female fans. Mitchell also asserted her desire for artistic control throughout her career, and still holds the publishing rights for her music. She is the sole producer credited on most of her albums, including all her work in the 1970s. A blunt critic of the music industry, she quit touring and released her last album of original songs in 2007. With roots in visual art, Mitchell has designed most of her own album covers. She describes herself as a "painter derailed by circumstance". To-date she has released 21 studio albums and three excellent live albums. Standouts include Clouds (1969), Ladies of the Canyon (1970), Blue (1971), For The Roses (1972), Court & Spark (1974), The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975), Hejira (1976), Miles of Aisles (1974) and Shadows and Light (1980). Asylum records released two excellent volumes of Joni's albums which are also highly recommended; The Asylum Albums (1972-1975), and The Asylum Albums (1976-1980). In 2002 Joni Mitchell was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. As a child, Mitchell taught herself guitar from a Pete Seeger songbook, however a childhood bout of Polio had weakened her left hand, so she devised alternative tunings to compensate. She later used these tunings to create nonstandard approaches to harmony and structure in her songwriting, which helped shape her characteristic sound which has distinct jazz influences.

Artist Website: jonimitchell.com

Featured Albums: Joni Mitchell

Related Artists: Graham Nash, Tom Scott, Charles Mingus

Collections: Women of Note

Catherine 'Kate' Bush CBE is an English singer-songwriter, musician, dancer and record producer born 1958 in Bexleyheath, UK. She makes innovative, fearlessly experimental work that's also commercially successful. From the start, Bush's music was ambitious and strange, and her blend of art rock, pop hooks, theatrical twists, fantastical vocal performances, and complex musicianship resulted in hits. She became an immediate star in the UK in 1978 with the release of her debut single "Wuthering Heights" and the album The Kick Inside when she was just 19. Bush is from an artistic background: her mother was an amateur traditional Irish dancer, her father an amateur pianist, and two elder brothers, Paddy worked as a musical instrument maker, and John was a poet and photographer. Both brothers were involved in the local folk music scene. The family grew up in a 350-year-old farmhouse at East Wickham near Welling. Bush trained at Goldsmiths College karate club where her brother John was a karate instructor, where she became known as "Ee-ee" because of her squeaky kiai (shout). Her family's musical influence inspired Bush to teach herself piano at the age of 11 and play the organ and violin. At age 11 she began composing songs, eventually adding her own lyrics. She was signed to EMI Records after Pink Floyd's David Gilmour helped produce a professional demo tape, having received a crude demo from the Bush family. EMI gave Bush a large advance which she used to enroll in interpretive dance classes taught by Lindsay Kemp, a former teacher of David Bowie. For the first two years of her contract, Bush spent more time on schoolwork than recording. In 1978, at the age of 19, she topped the UK Singles Chart with her debut single "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song. Her debut album The Kick Inside was released when Bush was still 19, with some songs written when she was as young as 13. EMI originally wanted a more rock-oriented song as her debut single, but Bush, who already was assertive in decisions about her work, insisted that it should be "Wuthering Heights." In the UK alone, The Kick Inside sold over a million copies, and "Wuthering Heights" topped the UK charts and became an international hit. Bush became the first British woman to reach number one on the UK charts with a self-written song. According to Guinness World Records, she was the first female artist in pop history to have written every track on a million-selling debut album. Kate Bush has gone on to release 10 studio albums of astonishingly high standard, and achieve international recognition. Standout albums include The Kick Inside (1978), Never For Ever (1980), The Dreaming (1982), Hounds of Love (1985), The Sensual World (1989), Aeriel (2005), and 50 Words for Snow (2011). Determined to prevent music industry interference, Bush set up her own publishing company, Kate Bush Music, and management company, Novercia, to maintain control of her work. Musically, Bush has a soprano vocal range which containS elements of British, Anglo-Irish and English accents, and musical instrumention from various periods and cultures. Reviewers have used the term "surreal" to describe her music. Her lyrics employ historical or literary references, as embodied in her first single "Wuthering Heights", which is based on Emily Brontë's novel of the same name. She has described herself as a storyteller who embodies the character singing the song. In 2023 Bush was named # 60 in the list of 200 Best Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone, and was being described as "the queen of art pop".

Artist Website: katebush.com

Featured Albums: Kate Bush

Related Artists: David Gilmour

Collections: Women of Note, Music Visionaries

Soft Machine is an English Rock-Jazz band formed 1966 in Canterbury, UK. After an early lineup reshuffle, the classic lineup solidified as Mick Box, David Byron, Ken Hensley, Lee Kerslake (drums) and Gary Thain (bass). Box, Byron and Newton were formerly in the band Spice, while Hensley and Kerslake came from The Gods. New Zealand born bassist Gary Thain, who was formerly with the Keef Hartley Band, died in 1975 and was initially replaced by ex-Family and King Crimson member John Wetton, who subsequently left to form Asia. He was replaced by Spider From Mars and Wishbone Ash bassist Trevor Bolder (who left and later returned), then by ex-pat Australian bassist Bob Daisley who was formerly with Kahvas Jute. At the present day, guitarist Mick Box is the last founding member still playing. Uriah Heep were part of the early 1970s rock scene, alongside contemporaries, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and have been referred to as major pioneers of the hard rock, heavy metal and progressive rock genres. The band have sold over 40 million albums worldwide, with over 4 million sales in the US, where their best-known songs include "Gypsy", "Easy Livin'", "The Wizard", "Sweet Lorraine" and "Stealin'". They also maintain a significant enduring following and perform at arena-sized venues throughout Europe and Japan. Heep's heavy prog sound was characterised by prominent organ playing over a driving rhythm section, augmented by Box's searing guitar work and Byron's operatic vocal delivery. The band's discography comprises 28 studio albums, plus live albums, EP's and Singles. Uriah Heep was one of the first and most successful bands signed to Vertigo Records, the newly formed Philips label. Another former member, vocalist John Lawton, died in 2021, at the age of 74. In September 2024, Uriah Heep announced that they will be embarking on a farewell tour, titled The Magician's Farewell, in celebration of their 55th anniversary. The tour is expected to start in February 2025 and last for two or three years, with 78 year old founding member, guitarist Mick Box (real name Michael Frederick Box) stating that the band "intend to play as many places as possible." The band took its name Uriah Heep from the fictional character created by Charles Dickens in his 1850 novel David Copperfield. Heep as a character is notable for his sycophancy.

Artist Website: uriah-heep.com

Featured Albums: Uriah Heep

Related Artists: The Gods, Toe Fat

Collections: 27 Forever

Soft Machine "Third"

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Music on Vinyl, Europe, 2011, 8713748981570, 2xLP, 180g Black Vinyl, Remastered, Gatefold Sleeve

Released in June 1970, Third is the third studio album by the English band Soft Machine and is widely considered a landmark of the Canterbury scene and jazz-rock fusion. It famously consists of four long compositions, each occupying an entire side of the original double-LP format. The album marked a radical departure from the band's earlier psychedelic pop roots toward a more complex, avant-garde fusion of jazz and rock. Abrahams departed after the first album to form Blodwyn Pig and Cornick left in 1970 to form Wild Turkey. Before Martin Barre became Tull's signature guitarist, Tony Iommi played for a brief period before going on to form Black Sabbath. The band's sound filled-out in 1970 with the addition of John Evans on keyboards. Tull started as a blues-based rock band but soon found their unique Progressive-Folk sound under the leadership of frontman and flautist Ian Anderson. Their debut album This Was (1968) was largely a platform for guitar and bass virtuosos Abrahams and Cornick's blues-jazz workouts, and was described by one critic as "Bluesbreakers with a flute". Their second album Stand Up (1969) captured their signature sound and remains one of the finest albums of the late '60s period. The albums Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung and Thick as a Brick, released between 1969-1972 are Jethro Tull's masterpieces. Stand Up and Benefit contain many of Tull's most memorable songs, highlighted by the sublime bass-work of Glen Cornick. Aqualung remains to this day Tull's best straight-ahead rock album, while Thick as a Brick is one of greatest concept albums of the '70s, even though it was meant as a parody of concept albums. The late '70s was a slightly mix-bag recording wise for Tull, with the exception of three excellent folk-tinged albums: Minstrel in the Gallery (1975), Songs From the Wood (1977) and Heavy Horses (1977), which are all excellent. Their last solid album was Stormwatch from 1979, after which the band never recaptured their early magic. Other releases worthy of note include A Passion Play (1973), Live: Bursting Out (1978), the excellent compilation Living in the Past (1972), and the archival set Nothing Is Easy: Live at the Isle of Wight 1970 released in 2004. After the band ceased touring in 2011 both Anderson and Barre have continued to record and tour as solo artists. Jethro Tull made a rare film appearance in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus on 11th December 1968, where they played "A Song for Jeffrey." Tull's lineup included guitarist Tony Iommi, who was briefly in the band prior to the appointment of long-term member Martin Barre, who had previously been in Noel Redding's band Fat Mattress. The band of course takes its name from the English agriculturalist Jethro Tull, born 1674 in Berkshire, who helped bring about the British Agricultural revolution by inventing a horse-drawn seed drill that economically sowed seeds in neat rows.

Artist Website: jethrotull.com

Featured Albums: Jethro Tull

Related Artists: Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Blodwyn Pig, Mick Abrahams, Wild Turkey, Paris, Black Sabbath

<iframe title="YouTube video player" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MvWIW0Lf63Y" style="border-radius: 12px;" height="100%" width="100%" allowfullscreen="0" allow="accelerometer; At his legendary Black Ark Studio in the '60s and '70s Perry's innovative techniques and production style pioneered the development of dub music using remixing and studio effects to create new versions of existing reggae tracks. He produced some of the best reggae and dub albums of that era, working with artists like Bob Marley, Max Romeo, Junior Murvin, Mikey Dread, The Heptones, The Congos and his house band The Upsetters. Perry got into the Kingston scene at a young age, where he apprenticed at Studio One and was a record seller for Clement Coxsone Dodd's Sound System A. After a short and acrimonious stint working with Joe Gibbs, he formed his own label, Upsetter Records in 1968 and had a hit single "People Funny Boy", which sold 60,000 copies in Jamaica alone. It is notable for its innovative use of a sample (a crying baby) as well as a fast, chugging beat. From 1968-72, he worked with the Upsetters, releasing numerous records which were popular in both Jamaica and the United Kingdom. He soon became known for his innovative production techniques as well as his eccentric character. In 1970, Perry produced and released the Wailers track "Mr Brown" with its unusual use of studio effects and eerie opening highlighting his unique approach to production. In 1973, Perry built the Black Ark studio in his back yard to have more control over his productions. There he produced notable musicians such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Byles, Junior Murvin, the Heptones, the Congos and Max Romeo. He also started the Black Art label, on which many of the productions from the studio appeared. The Black Ark studio burnt to the ground in the late 70's and Perry spent more time in England and the United States, performing live and making erratic records with a variety of collaborators, including Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor and Bill Laswell. In addition to the many superb albums Scratch produced for other artists, outstanding Upsetters and solo albums include Roast Fish Collie Weed and Corn Bread, Double Seven, Dub Blackboard Jungle, The Upsetter, Super Ape, Magaton Dub 1&2, Fire In Dub, and the magnificent Arkology compilation. He is a founding member of the influential Canterbury scene bands Soft Machine and Matching Mole, and an accomplished solo artist. Wyatt was with Soft Machine for their early classic albums but left in 1971 as a result of a serious accident which left him paraplegic. Although he has enjoyed very little commercial success, Wyatt is one of the foremost progressive rock musicians to have come from the '60s Prog/Jazz scene, and his solo works have been consistently excellent. As a teenager Wyatt lived with his parents in Lydden near Dover, where he was taught drums by visiting American jazz drummer George Neidorf. It was during this period that Wyatt became friends with expatriate Australian musician Daevid Allen, who rented a room in Wyatt's family home. Wyatt, Allen and others would later form Soft Machine, and Allen went on to lead Gong. Wyatt spent several years living in Majorca in the early 60's then returned to England and joined the Daevid Allen Trio with Hugh Hopper. Allen subsequently left for France, and Wyatt and Hopper formed the Wilde Flowers, with Kevin Ayers, Richard Sinclair and Brian Hopper. Wyatt was initially the drummer in the Wilde Flowers, but following the departure of Ayers, he also became lead singer. In 1966, the Wilde Flowers split into two bands—Caravan and the Soft Machine—and Wyatt, along with Mike Ratledge, was invited to join Soft Machine by Kevin Ayers and Daevid Allen. Wyatt both drummed and shared vocals with Ayers, an unusual combination for a stage rock band. After chaotic touring, three albums and increasing internal conflicts in Soft Machine, Wyatt released his first solo album, The End of an Ear, which combined his vocal and multi-instrumental talents with tape effects. A year later Wyatt left Soft Machine and formed his own band Matching Mole, a largely instrumental outfit that recorded two albums. Matching Mole gradually disbanded, and Wyatt began writing for his second solo album. He began to assemble a new band to record these numbers, but on 1 June 1973, during a birthday party for Gong's Gilli Smyth and June Campbell Cramer at the latter's Maida Vale home, an inebriated Wyatt fell from a fourth-floor window and broke his spine. He was paralysed from the waist down and has used a wheelchair ever since. After a period of convalescence Wyatt embarked on a solo career, and with musician friends including Mike Oldfield, Ivor Cutler and Henry Cow guitarist Fred Frith, released his solo album Rock Bottom in July 1974. Wyatt went on to release a total of ten solo albums, plus many excellent EP's and Singles. His undoubted masterpiece is Rock Bottom (1974), with other outstanding albums including Ruth is Stranger Than Richard (1975), Old Rottenhat (1985), Shleep (1997), Cuckooland (2003), and the compilations Eps (1999), His Greatest Misses (2004), and Different Every Time (2014). They were the archetypal '70s prog rock band characterised by their technical musicianship, jazz-classical-rock fusion style and lengthy compositions which eschewed traditional pop, blues and rock'n'roll song structures. The three players had impeccable prog credentials, with Emerson previously with The NIce, Lake with King Crimson, and Palmer with Atomic Rooster. They were hugely popular in the early '70s but their sound fell out of favour with the upheaval of Punk in '77. The band came to prominence following their performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970. In their first year they released two albums, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Tarkus, both of which reached the UK top five. The band's success continued with Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery, released on ELP's own Manticore Records label. After a three-year break, they released Works Volume 1 and Works Volume 2. After one final album, Love Beach, the group disbanded in 1979. In 1991, the original trio re-formed and released two more albums, Black Moon and In the Hot Seat, and toured at various times between 1992 and 1998. Outstanding releases include their first four studio albums; Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970), Tarkus (1971), Trilogy (1972) and Brain Salad Surgery (1973), plus the live albums Pictures at an Exhibition (1972) and Welcome Back My Friends.. (1974). Their live album Pictures at an Exhibition was notable for its rock interpretation of Modest Mussorgsky's original classical orchestral suite 'Pictures at an Exhibition', arranged for ELP by Keith Emerson. Atlantic Records initially declined to release the album in the US, claiming it would not sell or receive radio airplay because of its classical orientation. ELP convinced Island Records to import 250,000 copies into the US, all of which quickly sold. The strong response prompted Atlantic to officially release it in January 1972 and the album went to number 10 in the US charts. Despite their success and influence, ELP attracted derision throughout their career from rock critics and classical buff's alike, who felt their rather pompous overly complex prog sound was not rock'n'roll enough. Robert Christgau called them "the world's most overweening 'progressive' group", while DJ John Peel, who was definitely not a fan, describe the band as "a tragic waste of talent and electricity." You be the judge. After ELP finally split, Keith Emerson carried on as soloist and leader of the Keith Emerson Trio, Carl Palmer joined hugely successful MOR group Asia, and Greg Lake achieved solo chart success when his single, "I Believe in Father Christmas", which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and has become a Yuletide perennial favourite.

Artist Website: emersonlakepalmer.com

Featured Albums: ELP

Related Artists: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Nice, King Crimson, Asia, Atomic Rooster, Keith Emerson
