He also once described Leonard Cohen as \"the greatest songwriter of them all.\" As a recording artist Cave has released a catalogue of excellent albums including solo works, band works with The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party, Soundtrack collaborations with Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey, and spoken word recordings of his literature. He has also recorded with artists such as Shane MacGowan, Kylie Minogue, PJ Harvey, Neko Case and Marianne Faithfull. Although Nick Cave is recognised as the brilliant and charismatic frontman, the Bad Seeds band is a collective of brilliant musicians in their own right, all of whom have solo works and side projects. Mick Harvey has many excellent solo albums and works with Crime \u0026amp; the City Solution. Blixa Bargeld has many collaborative albums outside his work with Einstürzende Neubauten. Martyn P. Casey is part of Grinderman and was a member of iconic Australian band The Triffids. Warren Ellis has many collaborations with Cave and others, together with being a member of Dirty Three and Grinderman. Nick Cave's music has become progressively more sophisticated over time, without losing its artistic edginess and hard rock undercurrent. Since the tragic death of his son Earl in 2015, Cave's music has taken on a greater degree of transcendency, as expressed in the late period masterpieces \u003cem\u003eThe Skeleton Tree\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eGhosteen\u003c\/em\u003e. As a footnote, before his music career catapulted him to worldwide fame, Nick Cave was born and raised in the quiet country town of Warracknabeal; 330 km north-west of Melbourne, with a total population of around 2,000 citizens. The album \u003cem\u003eDoor Door\u003c\/em\u003e, credited to The Boys Next Door, was released in '79 and was unremarkable except for the excellent track \"Shivers\" penned by Howard. \u003cem\u003eThe Birthday Party\u003c\/em\u003e album was initially credited to The Boys Next Door but reissued as The Birthday Party when the band relocated from Melbourne to London in 1980, where they were championed by influential radio DJ John Peel. It was their next two classic albums, \u003cem\u003ePrayers on Fire\u003c\/em\u003e ('81) and \u003cem\u003eJunkyard\u003c\/em\u003e ('82) where the band reached their potential, in particular Cave who is heard in full voice. \u003cmeta charset=\"UTF-8\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDisillusioned by their stay in London, the band's sound and live shows became increasingly violent. They broke up soon after relocating to West Berlin in 1982.\u003c\/span\u003e Despite limited commercial success, The Birthday Party's influence has been far-reaching, and they have been called \"one of the darkest and most challenging post-punk groups to emerge in the early '80s.\" The band split in 1983 with Cave and Harvey forming Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, and Rowland S Howard working solo and collaborating with Lydia Lunch. \u003cspan\u003eTheir final show was at the Crystal Ballroom in Melbourne's (then) sleazy St Kilda district on 9 June 1983. Bassist Kym Bradshaw joined in 1975 then left in 1977 to be replaced by Algy Ward. Chris Bailey was the mainstay of the band as it went through latter day lineup changes, until his death in 2022. Guitarist Ed Kuepper left after the first three classic albums and went on to form The Laughing Clowns and have a successful solo career. Bailey also released several excellent solo albums. Initially starting out under the name Kid Galahad before renaming to the Saints in 1974, their musical inspirations came from 1950s rock'n'rollers such as Little Richard and Elvis Presley, and 1960s proto-punk bands like the Missing Links, the Stooges and MC5. They rehearsed in a shed at the back of Hay's place, opposite the local police HQ. Later, when they were unable to get gigs, the band converted their share house into a venue where they could play. With their debut single \"I'm Stranded\" released in September 1976, they became the first punk band outside the US to release a record. They pressed 500 copies to vinyl and released it on their own label Fatal Records, months before bands like The Clash or Sex Pistols had committed any of their music to tape. (I'm) Stranded stayed under the radar in Australia, but in the UK, where punk was starting to surface, it well and truly made its mark. It was named \"single of this week and every week\" by Sounds magazine, and BBC broadcaster John Peel called it \"one of the best singles of the year\". Over two days in December, the group recorded their first LP, \u003cem\u003e(I'm) Stranded\u003c\/em\u003e at Windows Studios Brisbane, which included the single, a cover version of the Missing Links' track \"Wild About You\", plus a bunch of Kuepper\/Bailey originals. The album was produced by New Zealander Rod Coe, who had been in several Australian surf bands and bass player in country legend Slim Dusty's band. \u003cem\u003eI'm Stranded\u003c\/em\u003e was critically hailed and is one of the best early Punk records of the era and still stands as one of the greatest albums of the 1970's. They hit the big stage when they supported AC\/DC in late December 1976 and, early in 1977, and moved to Sydney. Bakers's Raven Records, is possibly the finest. Chris Bailey died on April 9, 2022, aged 65, bringing an end to the original lineup. The label was formed to release King Gizzard's music and associated acts such as The Murlocs, giving the bands artistic and commercial control over their work. Many of the band's releases are based on a unique concept, yet share lyrical themes and feature characters that form a recurring cast, the most frequent being Han-Tyumi, a cyborg character who appears across multiple albums. Their songs also tell stories of \"gamblers, cowboys, Australian Rules footballers, people-vultures, Balrogs, lightning gods, flesh-eating beasts, sages and space-faring eco rebels.\" The band's lyrics have featured environmental themes, including pollution, environmental degradation and climate change. Rather than locking-in to a contract, the group financed the recording of their first album to guarantee creative control.
