Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and throughout western Canada before busking in the streets and nightclubs of Toronto. In 1965 she moved to the United States and began touring. Eventally settling in Laurel Canyon, California, Mitchell reeled off a string of hit singles and albums, including popular songs like \"Big Yellow Taxi\" and \"Woodstock\", which helped define an era and a generation. Her 1971 album \u003cem\u003eBlue\u003c\/em\u003e is often cited as one of the best albums of all time, and was rated the 30th best album ever made in \u003ci\u003eRolling Stone's\u003c\/i\u003e list of the \"500 Greatest Albums of All Time\". Between 1970-76 Mitchell delivered six masterpiece albums in succession; \u003cem\u003eLadies of the Canyon, Blue, For The Roses, Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eHejira\u003c\/em\u003e. Around 1975, Mitchell's vocal range began to shift and she began exploring more rhythmically complex jazz influenced music. She began working closely with noted jazz musicians, among them Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, as well as Charles Mingus, who asked her to collaborate on his final recordings. Mitchell's approach to music struck a chord with many female listeners. In an era dominated by the stereotypical male rock star, she presented herself as wilful and independent, yet complex and conflicted, endearing her to legions of female fans. Mitchell also asserted her desire for artistic control throughout her career, and still holds the publishing rights for her music. She is the sole producer credited on most of her albums, including all her work in the 1970s. A blunt critic of the music industry, she quit touring and released her last album of original songs in 2007. With roots in visual art, Mitchell has designed most of her own album covers. She describes herself as a \"painter derailed by circumstance\". To-date she has released 21 studio albums and three excellent live albums. In 2002 Joni Mitchell was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. As a child, Mitchell taught herself guitar from a Pete Seeger songbook, however a childhood bout of Polio had weakened her left hand, so she devised alternative tunings to compensate. Cohen's work explored religion, politics, isolation, sexuality and personal relationships. He is regarded as one of the most fascinating and enigmatic singer-songwriters of the late '60s, second only to Bob Dylan. Cohen was born into an Orthodox Jewish family which attended Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, to which Cohen retained connections for the rest of his life. On the topic of his religious upbringing, he said in 1967, \"I had a very Messianic childhood. I was told I was a descendant of Aaron, the high priest.\" Cohen pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s, and did not begin a music career until 1966. After graduating from McGill University, Cohen published his first book of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies (1956). The book contained poems written when Cohen was between the ages of 15-20. He continued to write poetry and fiction throughout the 1960s and lived in quasi-reclusive circumstances in a house on the Greek island of Hydra. There he published the poetry collection Flowers for Hitler (1964), and the novel The Favourite Game (1963). His second novel Beautiful Losers (1966) received much attention from the Canadian press and stirred up controversy because of a number of sexually graphic passages. The Boston Globe review stated: \"James Joyce is not dead. He is living in Montreal under the name of Cohen.\" In 1967, Cohen moved to the United States to pursue a career in folk music. During the 1960s, he was a fringe figure in Andy Warhol's \"Factory\" crowd. Warhol speculated that Cohen had spent time listening to Nico in clubs which influenced his stark and unadorned musical style. His song \"Suzanne\" became a hit for Judy Collins, who subsequently recorded a number of Cohen's other songs. After performing at a few folk festivals, he came to the attention of Columbia Records producer John Hammond, who signed Cohen to a record deal. His first album was \u003cem\u003eSongs of Leonard Cohen\u003c\/em\u003e released in late 1967 to generally dismissive reviews. In 2005, at the age of 71 and with a successful career behind him, it was discovered that Cohen's longtime manager and family friend, Kelley Lynch, had been stealing from him. Cohen discovered that he had unknowingly paid a credit card bill of Lynch's for $75,000, and that most of the money in his accounts was gone, including money from his retirement accounts and charitable trust funds. This had begun as early as 1996, when Lynch started selling Cohen's music publishing rights, behind his back. In October 2005, Cohen sued Lynch, who had misappropriated more than US$5 million from his retirement fund, leaving him only $150,000. To recoup the money his ex-manager had stolen, Cohen embarked on his first world tour in 15 years. With typical zen-like humility, he said that being \"forced to go back on the road to repair the fortunes of my family was a most fortunate happenstance because I was able to connect with living musicians. The members originally came together as the backing band 'The Hawks' for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. With Hawkins, they recorded a few singles in this period and became well known as the best rock group on the thriving Toronto music scene. For a short period, after splitting with Hawkins, the group renamed themselves Levon and the Hawks, and recorded several session under that name. In the meantime, In late summer 1965, Bob Dylan was looking for a backup band for his first U.S. \"electric\" tour. Levon and the Hawks were recommended by blues singer John Hammond Jr. After hearing the band play and meeting with Robertson, Dylan invited Levon and the Hawks to become his backing band. With Dylan, the Hawks played a series of concerts from September 1965 through May 1966, billed as Bob Dylan and the Band. Most of the concerts were met with heckling and disapproval from folk music purists. In terms of studio recordings with Dylan, Robbie Robertson played on most of the Blonde on Blonde album, and the entire band appeared on just one track \"One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)\". Young is renowned for being a member of the bands Buffalo Springfield, and Crosby Stills Nash \u0026amp; Young, along with his extensive solo career. After dropping out of school to be a musician, Young's first band was the Squires who had a local hit called \"The Sultan\". Over a three-year period the band played hundreds of shows at community centres, dance halls, clubs and schools in Winnipeg and other parts of Manitoba. While playing at The Flamingo in Fort William, Young met Stephen Stills, whose band The Company was playing the same venue, and they became friends. After leaving the Squires, Young worked folk clubs in Winnipeg, where he first met Joni Mitchell, who recalls Young as having been highly influenced by Bob Dylan at the time. At this time he wrote some of his most enduring folk songs such as \"Sugar Mountain\", about lost youth - and Mitchell wrote \"The Circle Game\" as a response. The Canadian band The Guess Who had a Top 40 hit with Young's \"Flying on the Ground is Wrong\", which was Young's first major success as a songwriter. In 1966 Young moved to Los Angeles where he formed Buffalo Springfield with old friend Stephen Stills. Buffalo Springfield only existed for three years but during that time delivered 3 albums of highly influential psych-tinged country rock. In 1969 Young also recorded two solo albums, the first self-titled album gained attention, but it was the second album, the superb \u003cem\u003eEverybody Knows This Is Nowhere\u003c\/em\u003e, made with backing band Crazy Horse, which catapulted Young's career. That same year Young reunited with Stephen Stills by joining Crosby, Stills \u0026amp; Nash, who had already released one album in May 1969. Young was originally offered a position as a sideman, but agreed to join only if he received full membership. CSN\u0026amp;Y performed at Woodstock in August 1969, and recorded the classic album \u003ci\u003eDéjà Vu\u003c\/i\u003e in March the following year. Young wrote the song \"Ohio\" following the Kent State massacre on May 4, 1970, and the song was recorded by CSNY and immediately released as a single, even though CSNY's \"Teach Your Children\" was still climbing the singles charts. Young's classic solo albums kept on flowing with the consecutive releases of After the Gold Rush, Harvest, On The Beach, Tonight's the Night and Zuma, highlighting a truely astoundingly creative period in Young's career. To the present day there are some 48 albums credited to Neil Young (excluding Archival releases) many of with he is backed by Crazy Horse. Added to this are many live albums which capture the artist as a superb live performer. There are also many superb compilations, of which \u003cem\u003eDecade\u003c\/em\u003e (1977) is a standout. One of his many philanthropic projects is Farm Aid. Young remains on the board of directors of Farm Aid, an organization he co-founded with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp in 1985, which is the longest running concert benefit series in the US and has raised $43 million since its first benefit concert in 1985. The story behind Neil Young's move to the US is a fascinating one. In 1966 in Toronto, Young joined Rick James' R\u0026amp;B outfit the Mynah Birds, but during the recording of their first album, James was arrested for being AWOL from the Navy Reserve. With the band then finished, Young and the bass player Bruce Palmer pawned the group's musical equipment and bought a Pontiac hearse, which they used to relocate to Los Angeles. The group also invited two guests to play on the sessions, Judi Richards, who provides vocalizations, and Marie Bernard performing the Ondes Martenot. In 2015, Rolling Stone magazine listed this album at number 36 of the best 50 prog-rock album and declared it the best prog-folk album. The lineup is keyboardist Matthew Tavares, bassist Chester Hansen, saxophonist Leland Whitty, and drummer Alexander Sowinski. Their sound spans multiple genres and their excellent musicianship has attracted collaborations with names such as Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator and Ghostface Killah. They formed when Tavares, Sowinski, and Hansen met in 2010 through the Humber College jazz program in Toronto. The trio united over a shared love for hip hop music, including that of MF DOOM and Odd Future. The band's first recording was a self-produced piece based on Odd Future's music. They played the track for a panel of their jazz performance instructors, who did not find that it had musical value. After they released the track on YouTube as \"The Odd Future Sessions Part 1\" it got the attention of rapper Tyler, The Creator, who helped the trio's video go viral. They uploaded their first EP \u003cem\u003eBBNG\u003c\/em\u003e to Bandcamp in June 2011, which included covers of songs from A Tribe Called Quest, Waka Flocka Flame and several tracks from Odd Future. In September 2011, they released their debut album, \u003cem\u003eBBNG\u003c\/em\u003e, recorded in a single three-hour session. Sputnikmusic called the album \"a welcome reinterpretation of modern jazz without the pretense of snotty wine parties and thick rimmed hipster dinosaurs.\" The trio played their first show together at The Red Light in Toronto that September. There, they met hip hop producer Frank Dukes who would become a close collaborator. In October 2019, Matthew Tavares announced his departure from the band, however he continues to collaborate with the group as a songwriter and contributor to side projects. To-date the band has released five studio albums plus two live sets. In addition they've released three collaboration albums, \u003cem\u003eSour Soul\u003c\/em\u003e, and the live \u003cem\u003eRB×BR 006 SXSW\u003c\/em\u003e with Ghostface Killah, and \u003cem\u003eToon Time Raw!\u003c\/em\u003e with Jerry Paper. In terms of their musical style, BBNG don't label themselves as primarily a jazz band, acknowledging that their music contains elements of rock music, Brazilian music, electronic music, and soul music, and does not maintain jazz tradition. The band themselves state, \"all we’re really trying to do is create something that’s unique and honest to who we are... we don’t really belong in any sort of box or are following any tradition or anything like that.” A Prefix magazine review called BadBadNotGood \"a jazz trio on paper - but often strange, forever imaginative, and ultimately revolutionary hip-hop and electronic beatmakers at heart\". They have been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize, Canada's most prestigious music, award four times.
