Released in 1981, Handful of Earth is the landmark fifth solo studio album by Scottish folk singer and guitarist Dick Gaughan. It is widely acclaimed as one of the most influential records in the British folk revival, frequently cited as the greatest folk album of the 1980s. The album marked Gaughan's return to music after a total break in 1979. It moved him into a more explicitly political direction, reflecting the socialist views and political turmoil in Scotland following the 1979 general election. It was named "Folk Album of the Year" by Melody Maker in 1981 and "Album of the Decade" by fRoots magazine readers and critics in 1989.
