Unknown Pleasures is the highly influential debut studio album by the English post-punk band Joy Division, released on June 15, 1979, by Factory Records. It is celebrated for its stark, atmospheric sound and iconic cover art, and is considered a cornerstone of the post-punk movement. Unknown Pleasures was recorded over three weekends in April 1979 at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, with producer Martin Hannett contributing a distinctive, spacious sound that the band initially resented but which has since been critically acclaimed as "the Joy Division sound". The album famously did not have any singles released from it at the time of its initial run, and did not chart in the UK until after lead singer Ian Curtis's suicide in May 1980.
