Seventeen Seconds is the definitive turning point where English rock band The Cure shed their frantic, teenage post-punk skin and established their signature gothic rock sound. Released on 18 April 1980 through Fiction Records, the album is a masterclass in dark minimalism, trading the cluttered energy of their 1979 debut, Three Imaginary Boys, for a cold, deeply atmospheric aesthetic. Frontman Robert Smith reimagined the band's sonic architecture by stripping away the excess, stating he wanted a sound with "a huge hole in the middle".
