Blut aus Nord is a French black metal band formed 1994 in Mondeville, Calvados, by Vindsval (vocals, guitar) and W.D. Feld (drums, electronics, keyboards). Additional members GhÖst (bass) and Thorns (drums) joined in 2003 and 2014 respectively. Vindsval began a solo project, under the name "Vlad", in 1993. He released two demos before changing the project's name to Blut aus Nord, before the release of the debut album Ultima Thulée. The band plays dark-ambient style of metal with avant-garde elements. The band rejects Satanism and nationalism, two common black metal themes. Instead they align themselves with "environmentalist black metal" groups such as Wolves in the Throne Room. The band has released 16 consistently good studio albums, starting with their excellent debut from 1995 Ultima Thulée. Other standout albums include Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age (1996), The Work Which Transforms God (2003), Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue With the Stars (2009), and Halucinogen (2019). Vindsval is also head of the underground French record label Appease Me..., which is home to several extreme metal acts, in addition to Blut aus Nord. The bands 2025 album release Ethereal Horizons is getting very positive reviews. The band name "Blut aus Nord" translates from the German as "Blood From the North", reflecting their focus on mysticism, paganism, Lovecraftian horror, and deep philosophy.
