In the Court of the Crimson King (subtitled An Observation by King Crimson) is the 1969 debut studio album by the English band King Crimson. Released on October 10, 1969, it is widely regarded as the first definitive progressive rock album, blending rock with jazz, classical, and symphonic elements. The album charted in the UK and US and achieved Gold certification. Kanye West sampled "21st Century Schizoid Man" for his song "Power". Rolling Stone ranked it as a top progressive rock album.
The art for In the Court of the Crimson King was created by UK amateur artist Barry Godber. The striking image commissioned by Pete Sinfield was designed to make the album stand out in record shops. Robert Fripp now owns the original painting and fiercely guards copyright control over its use.
