Ambient 1: Music for Airports is the sixth studio album by British musician Brian Eno, released in February 1979. It is widely recognized as the seminal and foundational album of the ambient music genre, a term coined by Eno himself. Brian Eno created Ambient 1: Music for Airports as a utilitarian work designed to diffuse the tense and anxious atmosphere of an airport terminal by providing a calming sonic environment. The idea came to him while he was waiting in the Cologne Bonn airport in the mid-70s and was dissatisfied with the uninspired "canned" Muzak being played.
