Dillinger | Artist

Lester Bullock aka Dillinger is a Jamaican reggae artist born 1953 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was part of the second wave of deejay toasters who rose to prominence during the mid-1970s. As a young man Dillinger would hang around Dennis Alcapone's El Paso sound system where he eventually landed a deejay gig in 1971. Under the influence of toasters Big Youth, U Roy and Dennis Alcapone, Dillinger came to the attention of Lee Scratch Perry who produced his first recording session. And it was "Scratch" who decided that Bullock should change his name to Dillinger, after gangster John Dillinger. "Dub Organizer" was released as a single followed by several other Perry-produced singles, but with limited success. In 1974, he recorded "Freshly" for Yabby You, which brought him his first hit, and 1975 saw another hit with "Brace a Boy" for Augustus Pablo. His excellent first album Ready Natty Dreadie was produced by Coxsone Dodd. Following this CB200 produced by Joseph Hoo Kim contained the song "Cocaine in My Brain" which became a huge international hit for Dillinger. He has continued to record and perform into the 21st century, and has toured internationally with Trinity, Ranking Joe and Yellowman. Standout albums include Ready Natty Dreadie (1975), CB200 (1976), Top Ranking Dillinger (1977) and Cornbread (1978). Also recommended is the 2000 archival release At King Tubby's Studio featuring Dillinger and I-Roy. Dillinger's second album CB 200 was released in 1976 via Island Records, giving the artist exposure to the UK and European audiences. The album cover featured the iconic Honda CB200 motorcycle which was a favourite of Kingston's notorious "Rude Boy" gangsters.
