Released in November 1970, the Grateful Dead's fifth studio album, American Beauty, is widely considered the band's studio masterpiece. Arriving just five months after Workingman's Dead, it solidified the band's shift from experimental psychedelia toward a more structured, harmony-driven Americana and folk-rock sound. The album focuses on acoustic instruments, pedal steel, and tight vocal harmonies, a style heavily influenced by the band's friendship with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Moving away from the long, improvisational jams of their live shows, no song on the original album exceeds the seven-minute mark.
