Released in March 1973, Houses of the Holy is often viewed as Led Zeppelin’s "creative crossroads," marked by a significant shift from heavy blues-rock toward a more diverse, "expansive" sound. It was the band's first album to consist entirely of original material. The album originally received mixed-to-negative reviews. Most notably, Rolling Stone's Gordon Fletcher dismissed it as "dull and confusing," while other critics found the genre-hopping "mediocre". Retrospective reviews are overwhelmingly positive. The 2014 remaster holds a Metacritic score of 98/100, and Pitchfork gave it a 9.3/10, praising its "sonic depth".
