Released on 5 October 1970, Led Zeppelin III is widely viewed as the band's "acoustic" turning point. Following the massive success of their heavy-hitting first two albums, the band retreated to Bron-Yr-Aur, a remote cottage in Wales, where the lack of electricity influenced a more pastoral, folk-driven direction. At launch, many critics and fans were disappointed by the shift away from the "hammer of the gods" sound. Some critics even accused the band of imitating contemporary folk-rock acts like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Today, it is frequently hailed as a "misunderstood masterpiece" and a vital bridge to the eclectic sounds of their fourth album.
Released in 1970 on Atlantic Records, Led Zeppelin III has an intricate sleeve design based around a 'volvelle' with numerous images printed on an enclosed rotating disc visible through holes in the outer cover.
