Patti Smith's debut album, Horses, released on November 10, 1975, is widely regarded as one of the most influential records in rock history. It is frequently cited as the first major-label punk rock album, effectively bridging the gap between New York's avant-garde poetry scene and the emerging raw energy of punk. The album is consistently ranked among the greatest of all time, appearing at #44 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums" list. Critics often describe it as a "shamanistic" blend of poetry and rock. Produced by John Cale of The Velvet Underground, the record captured a "raw essence" that many contemporary critics found shocking and transformative.
The photograph for the cover of Horses was taken by American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The first of his images to be used on record covers, Mapplethorpe's iconic image on Smith's debut album established her at the centre of New York's burgeoning underground art/music scene.
