Rites of Spring’s 1985 self-titled debut album is universally recognized as the definitive catalyst for emotional hardcore (emocore), the genre that eventually birthed modern emo. Produced by Minor Threat frontman Ian MacKaye and released via Dischord Records, the album stripped away the political dogmatism and hyper-masculine aggression typical of early 1980s Washington D.C. hardcore punk. In its place, the band injected unprecedented melodic vulnerability and visceral, introspective poetry.
