Moving sharply away from the high-energy, floor-filling synth-pop and massive 12-inch dance textures that defined their previous hits, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe delivered an introspective, deeply moving record draped in an autumnal chill and quiet melancholy. Co-produced alongside Harold Faltermeyer in Munich, the duo deliberately bypassed the booming late-'80s drum machines in favour of vintage analogue synthesisers and real orchestral arrangements, creating a sound that has aged flawlessly.
