Robert Wyatt’s Rock Bottom (1974) is a masterpiece of avant-garde art rock and one of the most intensely intimate albums ever recorded. Released on 26 July 1974 through Virgin Records and produced by Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, it occupies a singular space in music history. While its songs were largely conceived during a trip to Venice, the album was finalized and recorded after a harrowing 1973 accident where Wyatt fell from a fourth-floor window, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Forced to abandon his role as the drummer for Soft Machine and Matching Mole, Wyatt transfigured his trauma into a deeply vulnerable, underwater world of sound.
