Traffic signed with Island Records and very quickly solidified their unique psych-folk-rock sound and issued a string of classic singles, \"Paper Sun\", \"Hole in my Shoe\" and \"Here we go Round the Mulberry Bush\", which was the theme song for a movie of the same name. Their debut album \u003cem\u003eMr. Fantasy\u003c\/em\u003e was a psychedelic rock classic which highlighted the superb songwriting skills and musicianship of all the members. Their second album \u003cem\u003eTraffic\u003c\/em\u003e was also excellent and contained the Mason penned single \"Feelin' Alright\". The group then temporarily split, with Winwood joining super-group Blind Faith and Mason pursuing solo work and a stint with Delaney \u0026amp; Bonnie. Winwood, Capaldi, Wood and Grech reunited in 1970 to record the superb \u003cem\u003eJohn Barleycorn Must Die\u003c\/em\u003e album which, although issued under the band name, was predominantly a Steve Winwood solo album, with the musical prodigy writing all material and arrangements, playing most of the instruments, and producing the album. The following year saw the release of \u003cem\u003eThe Low Spark of High Heeled Boys\u003c\/em\u003e, which signalled the end of the band's creative peak. The band finally split in '94 after recording nine studio albums, after which Winwood carried on with a successful solo career, as did Capaldi and Mason. In 1973 he was catapulted to fame with his very first recording, the iconic Tubular Bells. He went on to create a series of works that established him as one of the UK's leading progressive rock musicians, blending progressive rock with world, folk, classical, electronic, ambient, and new-age music. Oldfield took up the guitar aged ten, first learning on a 6-string acoustic by copying parts from songs by folk guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. By the time he was 12, Oldfield played electric guitar and performed in local folk and youth clubs and dances. After leaving school Oldfield and his sister Sally formed a folk duo The Sallyangie. They toured England and Paris and recorded one album, \u003cem\u003eChildren of the Sun\u003c\/em\u003e (1969). In 1970 Oldfield became the bass player for ex Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers' group Whole Wide World. He played on Ayers's albums Shooting at the Moon (1970) and Whatevershebringswesing (1971). Both albums were recorded at Abbey Road Studios, where Oldfield familiarised himself with record production plus a variety of instruments, such as orchestral percussion, piano, Mellotron and harpsichord. By mid-1971, he had assembled a demo tape containing sections of a longform instrumental that became \"Tubular Bells (Part One)\", initially entitled \"Opus One\". While doing session work at The Manor Studio in Oxfordshire, owned by businessman Richard Branson, he met engineers Tom Newman and Simon Heyworth who played the tapes to Branson. Branson and Draper gave Oldfield one week of recording time at The Manor, during which he completed \"Part One\" of \u003cem\u003eTubular Bells.\u003c\/em\u003e By the end of January 1973, Branson agreed to release \u003ci\u003eTubular Bells\u003c\/i\u003e and secured Oldfield with a six-album deal. \u003ci\u003eTubular Bells\u003c\/i\u003e was released on 25 May 1973 as the first album on the Virgin label. Oldfield played more than twenty different instruments in the multi-layered recording. Its 2.6 million UK sales puts it at No. 34 on the list of the best-selling albums in the country. The title track became a top 10 hit single in the US after the opening was used in The Exorcist film in 1973. It is today considered to be a forerunner of the new-age music movement. Oldfield has to-date released 32 studio albums including collaborations and film soundtracks. Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd in 1965 along with Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright. Barrett was the lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter in Floyd's early years, and was central to the creation of their first masterpiece album \u003cem\u003ePiper at the Gates of Dawn\u003c\/em\u003e (1967), as well as the singles \u003cem\u003eArnold Layne\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eSee Emily Play\u003c\/em\u003e, which are part of the foundation of UK psychedelic music. Born into a comfortable middle-class family, Syd was the fourth of five children, and his father Arthur was a prominent pathologist. Syd bought his first electric guitar at age 15 and built his own amplifier. At one point at Morley Memorial Junior School, Barrett was taught by the mother of future Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters, and later he attended Cambridgeshire High School for Boys with Waters. Later, while a student at the art department of the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, Barrett met David Gilmour. In 1965, Barrett joined Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and guitarist Bob Klose, who were then called the Tea Set. When they found themselves playing a gig with a Dutch band called Tee Set, Barrett came up with the Pink Floyd Sound, later shortened to Pink Floyd. Syd was replaced by David Gilmour during the recording of the second Floyd album, due to his mental health deterioration triggered by the excessive use of LSD. Whereas Barrett had been the primary songwriter on 'Piper', on \u003ci\u003eA Saucerful of Secrets\u003c\/i\u003e (1968) each member contributed songwriting and lead vocals. Gilmour appeared on all but two songs, while Barrett contributed to three. Syd recorded two solo albums; \u003cem\u003eThe Madcap Laughs\u003c\/em\u003e (1970) is a quirky masterpiece of psychedelia, and \u003cem\u003eBarrett\u003c\/em\u003e (1970), which is also good but not as coherent a work. There have also been many fine compilations including \u003cem\u003eThe Best of Syd Barrett - Wouldn't You Miss Me?\u003c\/em\u003e (2001), and \u003cem\u003eAn Introduction to Syd Barrett\u003c\/em\u003e (2010). Barrett was known for his whimsical style of psychedelia, English-accented singing, and stream of consciousness writing style. As a guitarist, he was influential for his free-form playing and for employing effects such as dissonance, distortion, echo and feedback. Originally trained as a painter, Barrett was musically active for less than ten years. In 1972, he left the music industry, retired from public life and strictly guarded his privacy until his death. He continued painting and dedicated himself to gardening. Pink Floyd recorded several tributes and homages to him, including the 1975 song suite \"Shine on You Crazy Diamond\" and the 1979 rock opera \u003cem\u003eThe Wall\u003c\/em\u003e. In 1988, EMI released an album of unreleased tracks and outtakes, \u003cem\u003eOpel\u003c\/em\u003e, with Barrett's approval. In 1996, Barrett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pink Floyd. Cale is a classically trained Viola player as well as one of the early practitioners of avant-garde minimalism in rock music. He produced many seminal albums for artists such as Patti Smith, Nico, The Stooges, Squeeze and Nick Drake. He has also collaborated with artists such as Chris Spedding, Nico, Brian Eno, Lou Reed and Terry Riley. Coming from humble beginnings in a small Welsh mining village, the son of a coal miner father and primary school teacher mother, Cale enjoyed and followed rock music as well as avant-garde and European art music from a young age. A talent for viola saw Cale join the National Youth Orchestra of Wales at age 13, then upon winning a scholarship, he studied music at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Whilst there he organised an early Fluxus concert and had two scores published in \u003ci\u003eFluxus Preview Review\u003c\/i\u003e for the nascent avant-garde collective. He conducted the first performance in the UK of Cage's \u003ci\u003eConcert for Piano and Orchestra\u003c\/i\u003e, with the composer and pianist Michael Garrett as soloist. In 1963, he travelled to the United States to continue his musical training with the assistance and influence of Aaron Copland whom recommended him for Tanglewood. In New York he met John Cage and performed as part of La Monte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music. Despite his background in art music and the avant-garde, Cale also enjoyed rock music. In 1965 he co-founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed, recruiting his flatmate Angus MacLise and Reed's college friend Sterling Morrison to complete the initial line-up. Siouxsie and Severin met at early Sex Pistols gigs. When one of the bands scheduled to play the 100 Club Punk Festival, organised by Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, pulled out at the last minute, Siouxsie suggested that she and Severin play, even though they had no band name or additional members. Two days later on the 20th Sept 1976 the pair appeared at the festival with two borrowed musicians, Marco Pirroni on guitar and John Simon Ritchie aka Sid Vicious on drums. Although he has enjoyed very little commercial success, Wyatt is one of the foremost progressive rock musicians to have come from the '60s Prog\/Jazz scene, and his solo works have been consistently excellent. As a teenager Wyatt lived with his parents in Lydden near Dover, where he was taught drums by visiting American jazz drummer George Neidorf. It was during this period that Wyatt became friends with expatriate Australian musician Daevid Allen, who rented a room in Wyatt's family home. Wyatt, Allen and others would later form Soft Machine, and Allen went on to lead Gong. Wyatt spent several years living in Majorca in the early 60's then returned to England and joined the Daevid Allen Trio with Hugh Hopper. Allen subsequently left for France, and Wyatt and Hopper formed the Wilde Flowers, with Kevin Ayers, Richard Sinclair and Brian Hopper. Wyatt was initially the drummer in the Wilde Flowers, but following the departure of Ayers, he also became lead singer. In 1966, the Wilde Flowers split into two bands—Caravan and the Soft Machine—and Wyatt, along with Mike Ratledge, was invited to join Soft Machine by Kevin Ayers and Daevid Allen. Wyatt both drummed and shared vocals with Ayers, an unusual combination for a stage rock band. After chaotic touring, three albums and increasing internal conflicts in Soft Machine, Wyatt released his first solo album, \u003cem\u003eThe End of an Ear\u003c\/em\u003e, which combined his vocal and multi-instrumental talents with tape effects. A year later Wyatt left Soft Machine and formed his own band Matching Mole, a largely instrumental outfit that recorded two albums. The three players had impeccable prog credentials, with Emerson previously with The NIce, Lake with King Crimson, and Palmer with Atomic Rooster. They were hugely popular in the early '70s but their sound fell out of favour with the upheaval of Punk in '77. The band came to prominence following their performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970. In their first year they released two albums, \u003ci\u003eEmerson, Lake \u0026amp; Palmer\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eTarkus\u003c\/i\u003e, both of which reached the UK top five. ELP convinced Island Records to import 250,000 copies into the US, all of which quickly sold. The strong response prompted Atlantic to officially release it in January 1972 and the album went to number 10 in the US charts. Despite their success and influence, ELP attracted derision throughout their career from rock critics and classical buff's alike, who felt their rather pompous overly complex prog sound was not rock'n'roll enough. The roots of Genesis go back to 1965 when a pair of rival groups, the Garden Wall and the Anon, formed by students at the Charterhouse School merged, with the result that 15-year-olds Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford joined with 14-year-old Anthony Phillips, calling themselves the New Anon. Charterhouse alumnus, recording artist, and producer Jonathan King heard their demo tape and arranged for the group to continue working in the studio, and it was also King who renamed the band Genesis. In December of 1967 they cut their debut single, \"The Silent Sun,\" a very deliberate Bee Gees-style pastiche, which was released without attracting much notice from the public, and a second single, \"A Winter's Tale,\" followed with similar neglect. At this time, the group's music was a form of lyrical folk-based progressive pop, built on lush melodies primarily carried on acoustic guitar and piano, with lyrics that tended toward florid and trippy psychedelia, and Genesis showed an exceptional facility with poetic content as well as gorgeous melodies.
