Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde, released on 20 June 1966, is widely celebrated as one of the greatest achievements in rock history. As the final installment of his mid-60s electric trilogy—following Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited—it is often credited as the first significant double album in rock music. Dylan famously described the album's unique atmosphere as the "thin wild mercury sound," a blend of Nashville's professional polish and his own surreal, improvisational energy. This sound was achieved by moving recording sessions from New York to Nashville, pairing Dylan’s modernist poetry with the expert backing of top-tier session musicians.
When released in 1966 on CBS Records Blonde on Blonde was the first double album in rock music history and the first album ever to be released in a gatefold sleeve.
