He was the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers formed in 1976, a successful solo musician, and part of the mega-star combo The Traveling Wilburys. With a distinctive vocal and guitar sound, his Americana influenced style saw him become one of the most popular rock musicians of his era. Petty's interest in rock and roll music began at age ten when he had an opportunity to meet Elvis Presley. In the summer of 1961, his uncle was working on the set of Presley's film Follow That Dream, in nearby Ocala, and invited Petty to watch the movie's filming. Petty instantly became a Presley fan, trading his Wham-O slingshot for a collection of Elvis 45s. He also wanted to be in a band the moment he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. Growing up, Petty worked as a gardener at the University of Florida, then briefly as a gravedigger. In 1976 Petty started a band known as the Epics, which later evolved into Mudcrutch. The band included future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and was popular in Gainesville. After Mudcrutch folded, Petty pursued a solo career and Tench formed his own group, whose sound Petty admired. Eventually, Petty and Campbell collaborated with Tench, Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, forming the first lineup of the Heartbreakers. Their eponymous debut album gained little popularity among American audiences, achieving greater success in Britan. The singles "American Girl" and "Breakdown" peaked at No. 40 after the band toured the UK in support of Nils Lofgren. Their second album, You're Gonna Get It!, was the band's first Top 40 album, featuring the singles "I Need to Know" and "Listen to Her Heart". Their third album, Damn the Torpedoes, quickly went platinum, selling nearly two million copies; it includes their breakthrough singles "Don't Do Me Like That", "Here Comes My Girl", "Even the Losers" and "Refugee". He went on to make 17 studio albums, most credited to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty died on October 2nd 2017 at the age of 66 from an accidental drug overdose. Petty was suffering from various painful ailments prompting his overuse of opiod painkillers. In 2002, Petty appeared on The Simpsons in the episode "How I Spent My Strummer Vacation", along with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, and Brian Setzer. In it, he spoofed himself as a tutor to Homer Simpson on the art of lyric writing, composing a brief song about a drunk girl driving down the road while concerned with the state of public schools.

Artist Website: tompetty.com

Featured Albums: Tom Petty

Related Artists: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Traveling Wilburys

Philip Glass is an American modern classical composer and musician born 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland. Glass's work has been described as minimalism, having similar qualities to composers such as La Monte Young, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century. Glass was born to Ida and Benjamin Glass, who were Latvian and Russian-Jewish emigrants. His father owned a record store and his mother was a librarian. In his memoir, Glass recalls that at the end of World War II his mother aided Jewish Holocaust survivors, inviting recent arrivals to America to stay at their home until they could find a job and a place to live. Philip developed his appreciation of music from his father, discovering later his father's family had many musicians. His cousin Cevia was a classical pianist, while others had been in vaudeville. He learned his family was also related to Al Jolson. Glass studied the flute as a child at the Peabody Institute of Music, then at the age of 15 entered an accelerated college program at the University of Chicago where he studied mathematics and philosophy. He progressed to the Juilliard School of Music where the keyboard was his main instrument. Fellow students included Steve Reich and Peter Schickele. In 1964, Glass received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Paris with the eminent composition teacher Nadia Boulanger, from 1964-1966. In 1968 Glass founded the Philip Glass Ensemble, which is still in existence, but Glass no longer performs with the ensemble. Over the course of his career Glass has written 15 operas, numerous chamber operas and musical theatre works, 14 symphonies, 12 concertos, nine string quartets, various other chamber music pieces, and many film scores. Three of his film scores received Academy Award nominations: Martin Scorsese's Kundun (1997), Stephen Daldry's The Hours (2002), and Richard Eyre's Notes on a Scandal (2006). He also composed the scores for Mishima (1985), Hamburger Hill (1987), The Thin Blue Line (1988), The Truman Show (1998), and The Illusionist (2006). Glass is also known for his modern operas such as Einstein on the Beach (1976), Satyagraha (1980), Akhnaten (1983), The Voyage (1992), and The Perfect American (2013). And he wrote the scores for Broadway productions such as the revivals of The Elephant Man (2002), The Crucible (2016), and King Lear (2019). Many of Glass' works have been recorded, including performances by Glass himself on keyboards. Outstanding albums include Glassworks (1982), Koyaanisqatsi (1983), The Photographer (1983), Mishima (1985), Satyagraha (1985), Akhnaten (1987), Solo Piano (1989), Einstein on the Beach (1993), The Music of Candyman (2001), and The Hours (2002). When Glass was a youngster, his father's record store developed a reputation as Baltimore's leading source of modern music. Philip built a sizable record collection from unsold records, including modern classical music such as Hindemith, Bartók, Schoenberg, Shostakovich and Western classical music including Beethoven's string quartets and Schubert's B♭ Piano Trio. Glass has stated that Franz Schubert, with whom he shares a birthday, is his favorite composer. Philip Glass is one of the most influential living composers, being one of the first composers to win a wide, multigenerational audience in the opera house, the concert hall, the dance world, in film, and in popular music.

Artist Website: philipglass.com

Featured Albums: Philip Glass

Related Artists: The Philip Glass Ensemble, Michael Riesman, Kronos Quartet

Collections: Music Visionaries

Lou Reed was an American musician, singer and songwriter born 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the lead guitarist, singer and principal songwriter with the Velvet Underground after which he had a successful solo career spanning five decades. Having played guitar and sung in doo-wop groups in high school, Reed studied poetry at Syracuse University under Delmore Schwartz, and served as a radio DJ hosting a late-night Avant-garde program while at college. After graduating from Syracuse, he went to work for low-budget record company Pickwick Records in New York City, where he met fellow session player John Cale. Together with Sterling Morrison and Angus MacLise, Reed and Cale formed the Velvet Underground in 1965. After building a reputation on the avant garde music scene they gained the attention of Andy Warhol, who became the band's manager. When Cale departed the band after their second album, Velvet Underground effectively became Reed's backing band, with Reed as vocalist, rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter, as well as it's iconic front-man, projecting the band's louche, arty-druggy, anti-establishment and sexually ambiguous image. After leaving the VU, Reed would go on to a much more commercially successful solo career, releasing twenty studio albums. His second, Transformer (1972), produced by David Bowie and arranged by Mick Ronson, brought him mainstream recognition. Transformer is a rock masterpiece containing the hit song "Walk on the Wild Side". This one song with its autobiographical subject matter summed up Reed's life and muse in a succinct 4.12 minutes of cool lounge-jazz, with signature bass-work by veteran Herbie Flowers. Reed's third solo album was the superb Berlin from the following year. Of all his albums, this emotionally gut-wrenching masterpiece demonstrates Reed's credentials as a songwriter and performer who could produce timeless and powerful works created from his own real-life experiences. After the catharsis of Berlin, Reed moved to more mainstream rock-n-roll based material. Outstanding later albums include Rock n Roll Animal (1974), Coney Island Baby (1975), Street Hassle (1978), The Blue Mask (1982), New York (1989), and Magic and Loss (1992). Reed also collaborated with John Cale on the excellent Songs for Drella (1990) in memory of Andy Warhol. Perhaps Reed's most controversial work was the 1975 double album Metal Machine Music, which is an hour of modulated feedback and guitar effects. Described by Rolling Stone as the "tubular groaning of a galactic refrigerator", many critics saw it as a gesture of contempt, an attempt to break his contract with RCA or to alienate his "pop" fans. Reed claimed that the album was a genuine artistic effort inspired by the drone music of La Monte Young. Reed also contributed music to two theatrical interpretations of 19th-century writers, one of which he developed into an album titled The Raven. He married his third wife Laurie Anderson in 2008, and recorded the collaboration album Lulu with Metallica. He died in 2013 of liver disease. Reed has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Velvet Underground in 1996 and as a solo act in 2015.

Artist Website: loureed.com

Featured Albums: Lou Reed

Related Artists: Velvet Underground, John Cale, Reed & At age 11 Morris auditioned for Motown his own composition "Lonely Boy" and CEO Berry Gordy signed him up to the Tamla Label where he was dubbed Little Stevie Wonder. By the next year he was added to the travelling Motown Review and performed alongside artists like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes. Don Felder (guitar, vocals, banjo, mandolin, pedal steel guitar) replaced Bernie Leadon in 1975, Joe Walsh (guitar, keyboards, vocals) came aboard in 1976, and Timothy B. Schmit (bass, vocals) replaced Randy Meisner in 1977. With five number one singles, six number one albums, six Grammy Awards, and five American Music Awards, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America. The band started out when Frey, Henley, Leadon and Meisner were recruited by Linda Ronstadt as band members, some touring with her, and all playing on her third solo album, before venturing out on their own on David Geffen's new Asylum Records label. All the members had previously played in country rock outfits, Henley in the Shilohs, Meisner with Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band and Poco, Leadon with the Flying Burrito Bros, Schmit with Poco and lastly, Joe Walsh with the James Gang and as a solo artist in his own right. The band's sound started out with strong country influences, then became more mainstream rock sounding over time, but always featuring their characteristic vocal harmonising and country-edged instrumentation. As recording artists, the Eagles are one of the world's best selling bands, having sold more than 200 million records, including 100 million sold in U.S alone. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and were ranked number 75 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Artist Website: eagles.com

Featured Albums: Eagles

Related Artists: Poco, Joe Walsh, Jackson Browne, JD Souther, Flying Burrito Bros, Linda Ronstadt

Blondie is an American rock band founded 1974 in New York City by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. After some false starts the lineup settled on Harry, Stein, Clem Burke (drums), Gary Valentine (bass) and Jimmy Destri (keyboards). Stein and Harry had already gigged at CBGB's in an earlier band The Stilletos, and so it was that Blondie found themselves with a regular gig at NYC's premier underground punk/new wave music venue alongside the likes of Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Ramones, Television, etc. Their excellent debut album Blondie was released on Private Stock Records in '76 but was re-released in '77 on the larger UK label Chrysalis Records. The instigator was Dickie Peterson, who had previously been with the band the Oxford Circle along with Paul Whaley and future Blue Cheer member Gary Lee Yoder. The founding trio lasted three years, after which the lineup underwent constant changes, including several reunions. Other notable players to pass through the ranks were guitarist/vocalist Randy Holden, drummer Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix Experience), bassist Nick St. Nicholas (Steppenwolf), guitarist Gary Lee Yoder (Oxford Circle, Kak), and drummer Prairie Prince (The Tubes). Many rock aficionados regard Blue Cheer as the first Heavy Metal band, based on their power trio riff-based attack and sheer volume. For a time Blue Cheer earned the distinction of "World's Loudest Band", thanks to their wall of Marshall amps. That distinction passed to Deep Purple when they were at their peak. At a 1968 concert the band was so loud that within just a few songs, much of the crowd in the front section was fleeing the hall. The band was managed by Allen "Gut" Terk, a former member of the Hells Angels who decided that the line-up should be a power trio configuration after seeing Jimi Hendrix perform at the Monterey Pop Festival. Blue Cheer's debut album, Vincebus Eruptum released in 1968, is considered a seminal work in the development of heavy metal. The album featured their iconic cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," which became their most well-known song. In their latter years, from 1989 to 1993, the band toured mainly in Europe, playing with classic rock acts: Mountain, Outlaws, Thunder, The Groundhogs, Ten Years After, Mucky Pup, Biohazard and others. Outstanding Blue Cheer albums include the classic first two, both from 1968; Vincebus Eruptum and Outsideinside, followed by the lesser releases New! Improved! Blue Cheer (1969) and The Original Human Being (1970). The compilation albums Louder Than God: The Best of Blue Cheer (1986), and Good Times Are So Hard to Find: The History of Blue Cheer (1988) come highly recommended, as does the 2012 archival release 7. Dickie Peterson released the excellent Child of Darkness solo album in 1997, and Randy Holden released some fine albums after his Blue Cheer days. Gary Lee Yoder, together with Dehner Patten from Oxford Circle, formed the band Kak and released one excellent self-titled album in 1969. Author Tim Hills in his book "The Many Lives of the Crystal Ballroom" describes Blue Cheer as "the epitome of San Francisco psychedelia". Jim Morrison of The Doors characterized the group as "the single most powerful band I've ever seen", and Eric Clapton defined them as "probably the originators of heavy metal". She has been described as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" and the original "Riot Grrl", based on her life-long love of the music and her uncompromising image and attitudes. Jett got her first guitar at the age of 13 and took some lessons, but soon quit because the instructor kept trying to teach her folk songs. When she was in her late teens Joan's family moved to LA and she changed her name to Joan Jett, because she thought it had more of a rock-star sound than her birth name. She also began hanging out at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, a venue that provided the glam rock style she loved. Jett and Sandy West formed the Runaways in 1975 with the assistance of Kim Fowley. Jett shared some lead vocals, played rhythm guitar, and wrote or co-wrote some of the band's material along with Lita Ford, Sandy West, and Cherie Currie. The Runaways were active until 1979 after which Jett pursued a solo career and formed her backup band The Blackhearts, with starting lineup Jett (guitar, lead vocals), Danny O'Brien (drums), Eric Ambel (guitar) and Gary Ryan (bass). She released her debut self-titled album in 1980, then after a year of touring and recording, the Blackhearts recorded a new album entitled I Love Rock'n Roll. The title track off the album was number one on the Billboard chart for seven weeks in a row, and remains Billboard's 56th best song of all time. Starting out he played bebop and hard bop inspired by Charlie Parker. He then worked backup to jazz pioneers such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, playing on countless classic jazz albums. Trane himself laid down some of the finest Jazz albums ever recorded and his style became ever more experimental over the course of his life. As a boy living in Philadelphia his mother bought him his first saxophone, an alto. He played clarinet and alto horn in a community band before beginning alto saxophone in high school. From early to mid-1945 he had his first professional work in a cocktail lounge trio. To avoid being drafted by the Army, Coltrane enlisted in the Navy on August 6, 1945, the day the first U.S. atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. He was trained as an apprentice seaman at Sampson Naval Training Station in upstate New York before he was shipped to Pearl Harbor. Coltrane's musical talent was recognized, and he became one of the few Navy men to serve as a musician without having been granted musician's rating when he joined the all-White Melody Masters, the base swing band. An important moment in the progression of Coltrane's musical development occurred on June 5, 1945, when he saw Charlie Parker perform for the first time. In a DownBeat magazine article in 1960 he recalled, "the first time I heard Bird play, it hit me right between the eyes." Parker became an idol, and they played together occasionally in the late 1940s. Coltrane went on to play with fellow jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis, then formed his own Quartet, which released dozens of classic albums including the iconic A Love Supreme. Up until his death in 1967, Coltrane released 44 studio albums. There have also been countless posthumous releases of archival studio and live material. Lowell George met Bill Payne when the former was a member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, and Payne auditioned for the Mothers, but did not join. The pair soon recruited drummer Richie Haywood from George's previous band, The Factory, along with Mothers of Invention bassist Roy Estrada, to form Little Feat. Later, in 1972, the lineup changed with Kenny Gradney replacing Estrada on bass, plus additional members Sam Clayton (percussion, vocals, congas) and Paul Barrere (guitar, vocals), to complete the band's classic line-up. The band's music is a blend of rock, blues, country, and funk, making them difficult to fit within a single genre. They are known for their tight musicianship, eclectic songwriting, and a laid-back, Southern California vibe. From their self-titled debut album in 1971 to their most recent work, the band has been celebrated for their ability to effortlessly fuse various musical elements and create a sound that is uniquely their own, characterized by intricate guitar work, soulful vocals, and infectious grooves. They have been cited as an influence by many artists across different genres, and their music continues to resonate with fans old and new. In performance, the band is known for their improvisational skills and their ability to captivate audiences with their extended jams and high-energy shows. Their live albums, such as "Waiting for Columbus," are considered some of the best in rock history and showcase the band's superb musicianship. Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, Little Feat faced several challenges throughout their history, including the untimely death of Lowell George in 1979, at the age of 34. However, the band persevered, continuing to tour and record, releasing new music and reinvigorating classic tracks for a new generation of listeners. The band's songs such as "Willin'" have been covered by many artists, and their influence can still be heard in the work of contemporary musicians. As a recording outfit, Little Feat's creative output peaked with a run of three superb albums over the period 1972-74, namely Sailin' Shoes, Dixie Chicken, and Feats Don't Fail me Now. The following two albums The Last Record Album (1975) and Time Loves a Hero (1977) were also excellent, but they couldn't match the previous gems. However the band did bounce back strongly with the superb live album Waiting For Columbus in 1978. Despite the excellent musicianship of Paul Barrere and the others, the band was never the same after the untimely departure of their principal singer & guitarist Lowell George. Following are two obscure facts about Little Feat. Firstly, the name of the band came from a comment made by Mothers' drummer Jimmy Carl Black about Lowell's "little feet", with the spelling of "feat" as an homage to the Beatles. Secondly, Lowell George's first band the Factory made an appearance on the 1960s sitcom F-Troop as "The Bedbugs". They were also featured in an episode of Gomer Pyle USMC entitled "Lost, the Colonel's Daughter" (season 3, episode 27), where they appeared in the scene inside the A-Go-Go club.

Artist Website: littlefeat.net

Featured Albums: Little Feat

Related Artists: Lowell George, The Mothers of Invention, The Fraternity of Man

Madonna Louise Ciccone is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress born 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. Regarded as the "Queen of Pop", she has been recognized for her continual reinvention and versatility in dance/pop music production, songwriting and visual presentation. As a kid, Madonna's father put her in classical piano lessons, but she switched to ballet lessons where her ballet teacher persuaded her to pursue a career in dance. At Rochester Adams High School she was a straight-A student and a member of its cheerleading squad. After graduating in January 1976, she received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan and studied over the summer at the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC. In 1978, Madonna dropped out of college and relocated to NYC to take classes at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. To support herself she worked as a hatcheck girl for the Russian Tea Room, and an elevator operator at Terrace on the Park. Her break into music came in 1979 when she began dating Dan Gilroy, lead singer of the group Breakfast Club. She soon became a member of the band, singing and playing drums and guitar. She also briefly performed in Paris with French disco artist Patrick Hernandez as his backup singer and dancer. She left Breakfast Club with drummer Stephen Bray, who was her boyfriend in Michigan, and they formed the band Emmy and the Emmys. The two began writing songs and recorded a four-song demo in November 1980, but Madonna soon decided to promote herself as a solo artist. While frequenting nightclubs to get DJ's to play her demo, she met DJ Mark Kamins at Danceteria who took an interest in her music. Kamins arranged a meeting for her with Seymour Stein, president of Sire Records, and signed a deal for a total of three singles, with an option for an album. Kamins produced her debut single "Everybody" which was released in October 1982. In December she performed the song live for the first time at Danceteria, and made her first television appearance performing "Everybody" on Dancin' On Air in January 1983. Following the success of the singles, Sire/Warner hired Reggie Lucas to produce her self-titled debut album. Madonna asked John "Jellybean" Benitez, resident DJ at Fun House, to help finish the production and Benitez remixed most of the tracks and produced "Holiday", which was her first international top-ten song. The album was released in July 1983, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. It yielded two top-ten singles "Borderline" and "Lucky Star." Between her debut and 2019's Madame X, Madonna went on to release 17 studio albums, 6 live albums, 16 EP's, and 182 Singles. Featuring a less produced, more down-tuned approach both musically and lyrically, Essence moved Williams further from the country music establishment, while winning more fans in the alternative music world. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2002, while Williams won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the single "Get Right With God." In 2003 Williams released another superb album with World Without Tears, topping off a string of stand-out albums released between 1988-2003: Lucinda Williams (1988), Sweet Old World (1992), Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (1998), Essence (2001), and World Without Tears (2003). Add to this list the excellent Live at The Fillmore (2005) live set. The artist continues to release consistently fine albums to the present day, she tours constantly, and is an excellent on-stage performer, with her band Buick 6. In 1986, Williams married Long Ryders drummer Greg Sowders, but the couple divorced within eighteen months. In September 2009 she married Tom Overby, an executive from Best Buy's music department, who is also her manager. In 2023, she released her autobiography titled Don't Tell Anyone the Secrets I Told You: A Memoir. The book details her traumatic childhood, her relationships with her father and mother, and her struggle to forge a sustainable career in the music industry.

Artist Website: lucindawilliams.com

Featured Albums: Lucinda Williams

Related Artists: Buick 6

Collections: Women of Note

Ramones was an American punk rock band formed 1974 in Queens, New York City by Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), Tommy Ramone (Thomas Erdelyi), Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin) and Joey (Jeffrey Hyman). The group members remain anonymous and operate under the entity The Cryptic Corporation. They play avant garde music which blends experimental rock, minimal synth, musical parody and conceptual art. Since their first official release, Meet the Residents in 1974, they have released over 60 albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs over the course of over half a century. They have undertaken seven major world tours and scored multiple films. Pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, the Residents have won several awards for their multimedia projects. They founded Ralph Records, a record label focusing on avant-garde music, in 1972. The Residents' albums generally fall into two categories: deconstructions of Western popular music, and complex conceptual pieces composed around a theme, theory or plot. The group is noted for surrealistic lyrics and sound, with a disregard for conventional music composition. Outstanding albums include Meet The Residents (1974), The Third Reich 'n Roll (1976), Not Available (1978), Duck Stab (), Eskimo (1979), Mark of the Mole (1981), God in Three Persons (1988), Demons Dance Alone (2002), and Animal Lover (2005). The band has also released work under alternate names The Delta Nudes, and Pre-sidents. In the group's early days, many rumours circulated about its membership. As the cover art of Meet the Residents was a parody of the Beatles' 1964 album Meet the Beatles!, rumours circulated that the Residents were actually the Beatles, even specifically naming George Harrison. Many other rumours have come and gone over the years, one being that '60s experimental band Cromagnon shared members with the band. Les Claypool of Primus, and Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, have also been accused of being members of the band. From available data, the lineup has included Philip Lithman aka Snakefinger, Hardy Fox aka Charles Bobuck, Nessie Lessons, the wife of Hardy Fox, Nolan Cook, from the band I Am Spoonbender, and Carlos Cadona, from the Dead Kennedys, and female vocalist Laurie Amat. Former Henry Cow members Chris Cutler and Fred Frith are also know to have been contributors. The first known public performance of the Residents, Uninc. was at the Boarding House in San Francisco in 1971. The brief, guerrilla-style performance took the audience by surprise. A photo from it, showing Philip Lithman playing violin with his pinky "about to strike the violin like a snake", originated the stage name he used for the rest of his life, Snakefinger.

Artist Website: theresidents.com

Featured Albums: The Residents

Related Artists: Snakefinger, Charles Bobuck, Don Preston

Harold Eugene "Gene" Clark was an American singer-songwriter born 1944 in Tipton, Missouri. He was a founding member of the folk rock band the Byrds and the writer of many of their greatest songs, in addition to his own superb solo works. Gene was third of 13 children in a family of Irish, German, and Native American heritage. As a boy he began playing guitar at age 11, learning the songs of Hank Williams, Elvis Presley and The Everly Brothers. After High School he formed a folk group the Rum Runners, inspired by groups like the Kingston Trio. He was then discovered by the New Christy Minstrels, who hired him and he recorded two albums with the ensemble. After hearing The Beatles, Clark quit the New Christy Minstrels and moved to Los Angeles, where he met fellow folkie and Beatles convert Roger McGuinn, at the Troubadour Club. In early 1964 they began to assemble a band that would become the Byrds. Clark wrote or co-wrote many of the Byrds' best-known originals from their first three albums, including their mega-hit "Eight Miles High". He initially played rhythm guitar, but relinquished that position to David Crosby and became the tambourine and harmonica player. Bassist Chris Hillman remembering Clark said, "At one time, he was the power in the Byrds, not McGuinn, not Crosby—it was Gene who would burst through the stage curtain banging on a tambourine, coming on like a young Prince Valiant". With Clark's chronic fear of flying and squabbles amongst the group saw him leave The Byrds in early 1966 and embark on a solo career. As well as releasing several brilliant solo albums, Clark collaborated with artists such as Doug Dillard, Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Carla Olsen. Upon his death in 1991, Clark had released nine solo and collaboration albums, including three masterpieces of country-rock: White Light (1971), Roadmaster (1973), and No Other (1974), all recorded between 1971-74. In the space of five years between 1967-1971 they recorded six classic psych infused blues-rock albums and became one of the leading bands of their era. They were among the most influential and controversial rock acts of the 1960s, primarily due to Morrison's lyrics and voice, along with his erratic stage persona and legal issues. The group is widely regarded as an important figure of the era's counterculture. The band began with a chance meeting between acquaintances Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach in July 1965. They recognized each other as they had both attended the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Manzarek was then in an unsuccessful band called Rick & the Ravens with his brothers Rick and Jim, while drummer John Densmore was playing with the Psychedelic Rangers and knew Manzarek from meditation classes. Densmore joined the group, combining their varied musical backgrounds, from jazz, rock, blues, and folk music. The five, along with bass player Patty Sullivan, recorded a six-song demo on September 2, 1965. In late 1965, after Manzarek's two brothers left, guitarist Robby Krieger joined. Bassist Patty Sullivan moved on and the band continued without a permanent bassist, instead relying on the bass notes of Ray Manzarek's Fender Rhodes keyboard. From February to May 1966, the group had a residency at the rundown and sleazy Los Angeles club London Fog, appearing on the bill with "Rhonda Lane Exotic Dancer." But soon graduated to the more esteemed Whisky a Go Go, where they became the house band. There they were spotted by Elektra Records president Jac Holzman, who was present at the recommendation of Love singer Arthur Lee. They soon signed with Elektra and started a long and successful partnership with producer Paul A. Rothchild and sound engineer Bruce Botnick. The Doors were fired from the Whisky on August 21, 1966, when Morrison added an explicit retelling and profanity-laden version of the Greek myth of Oedipus during "The End." They recorded their self-titled debut album around August 1966, at Sunset Sound Studios, Los Angeles. The album, which contains the singles "Breakon Through" and "Light My Fire" is today regarded as a masterpiece. "Light My Fire" became a hit and catapulted the band to mainstream recognition through high profile US TV shows The Ed Sullivan Show and The Jonathan Winters Show. Over the next four years The Doors rode a roller-coaster of fame and disaster fuelled by their combined musical creativity which was ultimately derailed by Jim Morrison's hedonistic alcohol and drug fuelled self-destructive urges. On March 11, 1971, near the end of the mixing of L.A. Woman, Morrison took a leave of absence from the Doors and moved to Paris with Pamela Courson. On July 3, 1971, following months of residency, Morrison was found dead in the bath by Courson. The cause of death was listed as heart failure, and he was buried in the "Poets' Corner" of Père Lachaise Cemetery on July 7. After Morrison died, the surviving members considered replacing him with several new people, such as Paul McCartney on bass, and Iggy Pop on vocals. But after neither of these worked out, Krieger and Manzarek took over lead vocal duties themselves. They released two further studio albums but without their shamanic frontman the magic was gone. Zappa's work as a soloist and leader of The Mothers of Invention, is characterised by nonconformity, improvisation, musical virtuosity, and satire of American culture. During Zappa's lifetime, he was a highly productive and prolific artist however he enjoyed little commercial success and was generally regarded by all but die-hard fans and fellow musicians, as a fringe artist. Since his death in 1993 at the age of 53, his reputation as a gifted and highly influential composer and musician has increased greatly as his work is appreciated more widely. At Antelope Valley High School Zappa met Don Glen Vliet, who later adopted the stage name Captain Beefheart. Zappa and Vliet became close friends, sharing an interest in R&B records and influencing each other musically throughout their careers. In April 1965 Zappa was invited to take over as guitarist in local R&B band the Soul Giants. Zappa accepted, and soon assumed leadership and the role as co-lead singer. The band debuted at the Broadside Club in Pomona California and was renamed the Mothers since this gig took place on May 10, 1965, Mother's Day. They increased their bookings after beginning an association with manager Herb Cohen and gradually gained attention on the burgeoning Los Angeles underground music scene. In early 1966, they were spotted by leading record producer Tom Wilson, the producer for Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel, who signed the Mothers to the Verve label. In his lifetime Zappa released 37 studio albums plus a host of live albums. There have been almost as many posthumous archival and compilation collections released since his death. The albums tend to fall into three broad categories: Mothers of Invention group albums, Zappa solo albums, and avant-garde classical orchestral works. The original lineup comprised Ron Mael (keyboards), Russell Mael (vocals), Earle Mankey (guitar), Surly Ralph Oswald (bass) and John Mendelsohn (drums). Originally called Halfnelson, they changed names after the release of their Todd Rundgren produced debut album Halfnelson, which was renamed Sparks upon its second issue. The Mael brothers both attended UCLA, Ron studying cinema and graphic art and Russell, theatre arts and filmmaking. Detesting the folk music scene, they instead developed Anglophile tastes for bands such as the Who, Pink Floyd, the Kinks and The Move. In fact their early albums were much more popular in the UK than in their native USA. They are noted for Russell's distinctive falsetto voice, Ron's keyboard playing style with minimal bodily movement and an idiosyncratic, theatrical stage presence, typified in the contrast between Russell's animated, hyperactive frontman antics and Ron's deadpan scowling. Sparks' sound has always been very much their own, spanning rock, pop, disco and orchestral, always with their highly stylised arrangements and quirky lyrics. Their music is often accompanied by sophisticated and incisive lyrics, often about women or Shakespearean literature references. They collaborated with Giorgio Moroder to record the excellent No.1 in Heaven, and with Franz Ferdinand on the not altogether successful FFS project. Outstanding albums include Halfnelson (1971), A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing (1973), Kimono My House (1974), Propaganda (1974), Indiscreet (1975), No.1 in Heaven (1979), Angst in my Pants (1982), Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins (1994), Lil' Beethoven (2002), Hello Young Lovers (2006), and 2023's The Girl is Crying in Her Latte. The excellent 2013 archival compilation New Music for Amnesiacs: The Ultimate Collection, is also highly recommended. Sparks has influenced many later genres including synth pop, new wave, post-punk and alternative music, influencing a wide range of other artists including New Order, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth, Nirvana and Björk. As a matter of interest, both Ron and Russell are seen in the audience during the Ronettes' performance in the concert film 'The Big T.N.T. Reed and Cale were previously in proto-Punk band The Primitives. Their unique Garage Art-Rock edged with Cale's avant-garde influence and Reed's street-wise lyrics made the VU one of the most influential bands of the 1960's. For their early shows Andy Warhol, who was acting as their Manager, suggested they use the German-born singer Christa Päffgen aka Nico. They emerged from the creative CBGB's scene and landed a recording contract with Sire Records. Their unique blended of Pop/Punk/Funk coupled with David Byrne's creative lyrics and stage presence, won them worldwide critical acclaim. The formation of the band dates back to 1973 when David Byrne and Chris Frantz, both students at Rhode Island School of Design, formed a band the Artistics. Fellow student Tina Weymouth, Frantz's girlfriend, eventually joined them as bass player once she learned how to play by listening to Suzie Quatro albums. The three moved to New York City, sharing a communal loft, renaming themselves Talking Heads. Their first gig as a trio was opening for the Ramones at CBGB on June 5, 1975. In March 1977, they added Jerry Harrison, formerly of Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers, on keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals. Their debut album Talking Heads: 77 attracted widespread critical acclaim and delivered their first charting single, "Psycho Killer". The period 1978-80 was a creative peak for the band when, in collaboration with Brian Eno, they recorded three of their masterpiece albums: More Song About Buildings and Food, Fear of Music and Remain in Light. She became influential in the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 masterpiece debut album Horses with Lenny Kaye on guitar and produced by John Cale. Called the "punk poet laureate" Smith fuses poetry in her rock/post-punk work. After High School she attended College briefly before dropping out and travelling to Paris with her sister, where the two started busking and doing performance art. When Smith returned to Manhattan, she lived at the Hotel Chelsea with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. They frequented Max's Kansas City on Park Avenue, and Smith provided the spoken word soundtrack for Sandy Daley's art film Robert Having His Nipple Pierced, starring Mapplethorpe. Mapplethorpe was an important artistic inspiration to Smith and they remained lifelong friends until Mapplethorpe's death in 1989. Mapplethorpe's photographs of Smith became the covers for the Patti Smith Group albums. Smith frequented NYC's CBGBs and Max's Kansas City clubs, and fell in with the burgeoning punk new-wave rock scene. By 1974, Patti Smith was performing rock music, initially with guitarist, bassist and rock archivist Lenny Kaye and later with a full band comprising Kaye (guitar), Ivan Kral (guitar, bass), Jay Dee Daugherty (drums) and Richard Sohlon (piano). Smith was romantically involved with Allen Lanier, Blue Öyster Cult's keyboardist and was briefly considered as lead singer for the band. She contributed lyrics to several Blue Öyster Cult songs, including "Debbie Denise", "Baby Ice Dog", "Career of Evil", "Fire of Unknown Origin", "The Revenge of Vera Gemini", on which she performs duet vocals, and "Shooting Shark". During these years, Smith was also a rock music journalist, writing periodically for Rolling Stone and Creem magazine. In March 1975 the Patti Smith Group began a two-month weekend set of shows at CBGB in New York City with the band Television. The group was spotted by Clive Davis, who signed them to Arista Records. Later that year they recorded their debut album Horses produced by John Cale. The album fused punk rock and spoken poetry and begins with a cover of Van Morrison's "Gloria", and Smith's opening words: "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine", an excerpt from one of her early poems. The austere cover photograph by Mapplethorpe has become one of rock's classic images. Horses is a masterpiece of its time, and the Patti Smith Group went on to record three more excellent albums. By the 1980's Smith began working as a soloist, and has released a further 11 albums to-date, the last four being collaborations with electronic tribal-ambient group Soundwalk Collective. Standout albums include Horses (1975), Radio Ethiopia (1976), Easter (1978), Wave (1979), Gone Again (1996) and Trampin' (2004). The 2002 compilation Land (1975-2002) is an excellent collection of album tracks, outtakes, live tracks and other unreleased material. Smith continues recording and performing and has authored many books including poetry and semi-autobiographical works. In 1980 Patti married Fred "Sonic" Smith, former guitarist for Detroit rock band MC5, who died in 1995. Fred and Patti's son Jackson married White Stripes' drummer Meg White, making Patti, Meg's mother-in-law. Galás creates highly original and thought provoking political performance works. One of her major early works, Plague Mass, concerns the AIDS epidemic, a disease which took her brother, the playwright Philip-Dimitri Galás, in 1986. Her soprano voice is powerful but deeply unnerving. At 13, Galás began playing gigs in San Diego with her father's band, performing Greek and Arabic music. Her father, who had egyptian-greek heritage, also introduced her to classical, blues standards, and rebetika music. At 14 Galás made her orchestral debut with the San Diego Symphony as the piano soloist for Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.1. In the 1970s, Galás studied biochemistry and the University of Southern California, specializing in immunology and haematology studies. Galás made her professional debut in Europe while doing post-graduate studies there in 1979. She made her solo performance debut at the Festival d'Avignon performing lead In Un Jour comme un autre, by composer Vinko Globokar, a work based upon Amnesty International's documentation of the arrest and torture of a Turkish woman for alleged treason. As well as her solo works she has collaborated with avant-garde composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Vinko Globokar and John Zorn. Outstanding albums include Diamanda Galas (1984), The Divine Punishment (1986), Saint of the Pit (1986), Plague Mass (1991), and Defixiones, Will and Testament (2003). The 1988 compilation Masque of the Red Death is also recommended. Galás's commitment to addressing social issues and her involvement in collective action has made her concentrate on themes such as AIDS, mental illness, despair, loss of dignity, political injustice, historical revisionism, and war crimes. All heavy issues, which perhaps explains one critic's appraisal of Galas as "a mourner for the world's victims." As a girl, Galás acquired a taste for dark literature by authors such as Marquis de Sade, Friedrich Nietzsche, Antonin Artaud, and Edgar Allan Poe. Galás is also active in the fields of visual arts and film. She made a voice cameo performing voices for the Japanese assassins and flying weapons in Ninja III: The Domination. This was followed by three more film appearances: the voice of the witch in John Milius's Conan the Barbarian (1982), the voice of the dead in Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow, and Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film, Bram Stoker's Dracula, where she contributed erotically charged moans, breathless sighs, and high-pitched shrieks.

Artist Website: diamandagalas.com

Featured Albums: Diamanda Galás

Related Artists: John Paul Jones, Diamanda Galas

Collections: Women of Note

(Incomplete Bio)

Artist Website: ubuprojex.com

Featured Albums: Pere Ubu

Related Artists: David Thomas, Red Krayola, Peter Laughner, Electric Eels

Patti Smith "Horses"

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Arista, Germany, 2015, 88691960281, Remastered, 180g Vinyl, Incl. The album is consistently ranked among the greatest of all time, appearing at #44 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums" list. As a teenager, Joplin immersed herself in the music of blues artists Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Lead Belly, and she started singing folk and blues in high school and later at Lamar University Texas. In 1963 she hitch-hiked from Texas to San Francisco where she fell in with musician from bands such as Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. Joplin was arrested in San Francisco in 1963 for shoplifting. During the two years that followed, her drug use increased and she acquired a reputation as a "speed freak" and occasional heroin user. She was also a heavy drinker throughout her career; her favorite beverage being Southern Comfort. In 1964, Joplin and Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen recorded a number of blues standards. She also made several solo blues recordings including the song "Turtle Blues", which later appeared on the 1995 album This is Janis Joplin 1965. In 1966, Joplin's bluesy vocal style attracted the attention of the San Francisco-based psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, which had gained some renown among the nascent hippie community in Haight-Ashbury. She was recruited to join the group by Chet Helms, a promoter who was managing Big Brother and with whom she had hitchhiked from Texas to San Francisco a few years earlier. Five singles by Joplin became hits during her lifetime, the Kris Kristofferson song "Me and Bobby McGee", "Piece of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down on Me", "Ball and Chain" and her final recording, "Mercedes Benz", which she completed in a single take. Joplin was one of the most gifted and widely known female rock stars of her era and all her studio and live albums are superb. Janis was also a devastatingly good live performer, as shown in her two most famous recorded performances at Monterey Pop Festival 1967 and Woodstock in 1969. Joplin's death in October 1970 from an accidental heroin overdose stunned her fans and shocked the music world, especially when coupled with the death just 16 days earlier of another rock icon, Jimi Hendrix, also at age 27. The film The Rose (1979) is loosely based on Joplin's life. Originally planned to be titled Pearl, the film was fictionalized after her family declined to allow the producers the rights to her story. Bette Midler earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the film. Janis was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and Rolling Stone ranked her #46 on its 2004 list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Artist Website: janisjoplin.com

Featured Albums: Janis Joplin

Related Artists: Big Brother & The Holding Company

Collections: Women of Note, 27 Forever

Miles Dewey Davis III was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer born 1926 in Alton, Illinois. He was one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music. Over his 50 year career Davis moved through be-bop, hard bop, modal jazz, jazz-funk and jazz-rock fusion styles, keeping at the forefront of major stylistic developments in jazz, and ultimately creating his own sound. Raised in East St. Louis, Davis left to study at Julliard in New York City, before dropping out and making his professional debut as a member of Charlie Parker's bebop quintet from 1944 to 1948. He recorded for the first time on April 24, 1945, when he entered the studio as a sideman for Herbie Fields' band. The following year, he recorded as a leader for the first time with the Miles Davis Sextet plus Earl Coleman and Ann Baker, one of the few times he accompanied a singer. In 1945, Davis replaced Dizzy Gillespie in Charlie Parker's quintet and that same year participated in several recording sessions as part of Parker's group Reboppers that also involved Gillespie and Max Roach. In August 1948, Davis declined to join Duke Ellington's orchestra and instead began rehearsals with a nine-piece band featuring saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and arrangements by Gil Evans. Evans' Manhattan apartment had become the meeting place for several young musicians and composers such as Davis, Roach, Lewis, and Mulligan who were unhappy with the increasingly virtuoso instrumental techniques that dominated bebop. These gatherings led to the formation of the Miles Davis Nonet, which included atypical modern jazz instruments such as French horn and tuba, leading to a thickly textured, orchestral sound. After signing a contract with Capitol Records they recorded sessions in January and April 1949, which sold little but influenced the "cool" or "west coast" style of jazz. The Nonet recorded a dozen tracks which were released as singles and subsequently compiled on the 1957 album Birth of the Cool. Davis' work from the late '50s through to the end of the '60s saw him become the most widely recognised jazz musician of his era, an outspoken social critic and an arbiter of style in attitude and fashion, as well as music. During this period Davis created many timeless jazz albums such as 'Round About Midnight (1957), Cookin' With Miles (1957), Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (1958), Milestones (1958), Kind of Blue (1959), Workin' With Miles (1959) Sketches of Spain (1960), Miles Smiles (1967) and Nefertiti (1968). By 1969 Davis was entering his 'Electric Period', heralding a major change in direction towards jazz-rock fusion and the release of a series of superb albums which re-shaped jazz and crossed over into mainstream rock audiences; In A Silent Way (1969), Bitches Brew (1970), A Tribute to Jack Johnson (1971), On The Corner (1972) and Get Up With It (1974). In addition to his studio albums, Davis and his various ensembles released many excellent live albums, including Miles Davis in Person at the Blackhawk San Francisco (1961), Live-Evil (1971), and Dark Magus (1977). Based on professional rankings of his albums and songs, the aggregate website Acclaimed Music lists Miles Davis as the 16th most acclaimed recording artist in history. In 2001 The Miles Davis Story, a two-hour documentary film by Mike Dibb, won an International Emmy Award for arts documentary of the year. The semi-biographical film Miles Ahead was a 2015 American music film directed by Don Cheadle. Davis died on September 28th 1991 at the age of 65. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx New York, with one of his trumpets, near the site of Duke Ellington's grave.

Artist Website: milesdavis.com

Featured Albums: Miles Davis

Related Artists: John Coltrane, Gil Evans, Michel Legrand

Collections: Music Visionaries
