Released in 1970, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath is widely regarded as the foundational album of heavy metal, transforming blues-rock into a darker, "uglier" sound. Recorded in just over 12 hours, the album is defined by Tony Iommi’s heavy, slow-tempo riffs, Ozzy Osbourne’s haunting vocals, and a spooky, occult atmosphere. The album is credited as the starting point for heavy metal and often considered the first stoner rock record. It is noted for an eerie, "dread-filled" sound, particularly on the self-titled opening track, which features the iconic tritone riff. While rooted in blues-rock, the sound is far more ominous and heavy than contemporaries, featuring raw production and jam-heavy, psychedelic, and bluesy elements.
