The 1970 self-titled debut album by Black Merda is a critically acclaimed gem of underground "black rock" that synthesises psychedelic rock, heavy funk, and gritty soul. From Detroit, the band—comprising guitarists Anthony and Charles Hawkins, bassist/vocalist Vessee L. Veasy, and drummer Tyrone Hite—was vastly ahead of its time. They bypassed the standard horn-heavy R&B formulas of the era to pioneer a raw, guitar-centric sound steeped in an uncompromising political consciousness.
