Released in March 1970, the self-titled debut from Fort Worth, Texas-based Bloodrock is widely regarded as a foundation of American hard rock and "proto-metal". Produced by Terry Knight—best known for his work with Grand Funk Railroad—the album established the band's signature sound: a heavy, often ominous blend of blues-rock, psychedelia, and aggressive organ-guitar duels. The record is defined by the interaction between Lee Pickens' crunchy, lead guitar solos and Steve Hill’s Hammond organ. Critics frequently compare this sound to Deep Purple or Grand Funk Railroad.
