Released in April 1998, Boards of Canada’s debut album, Music Has the Right to Children, is widely considered an absolute classic of electronic music. Created by Scottish brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, the 71-minute record fundamentally reshaped Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) and ambient electronica. Rather than leaning into the hyper-futuristic, crisp digital production popular in the late '90s, the duo looked backward. They crafted an intoxicating sonic universe out of warbling analogue synths, mid-tempo hip-hop beats, and uncanny, nostalgic field recordings.
