The self-titled 1972 debut album by Captain Beyond is widely regarded as a cult classic of progressive hard rock. Featuring a "supergroup" lineup of ex-members from Deep Purple (Rod Evans), Iron Butterfly (Lee Dorman and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt), and Johnny Winter (Bobby Caldwell), the album is celebrated for its intricate time signatures, seamless song transitions, and cosmic, space-themed atmosphere. The album is unique for its continuous flow; most tracks segue directly into one another, forming three distinct musical suites.

The original 1972 release of Captain Beyond on Capricorn Records came with a 3-D like illustration printed on "Lenticular" plastic glued to the centre of the front cover.
