Chaino Africana (1959) is a foundational, yet highly eccentric gem of the 1950s exotica genre. Released on Dot Records, it is essentially a spectacular one-man show orchestrated by the enigmatic percussionist Chaino—who was heavily marketed under a wildly fabricated backstory as a wild orphan from a lost central African tribe, but was actually a Chicago-born bongo player named Leon Johnson.
