Chaka Khan’s self-titled 1982 album (often called Chaka Khan to distinguish it from her 1978 debut Chaka) is a high-energy fusion of post-disco funk, synth-pop, and jazz. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin, it is frequently cited by critics as a "grossly underrated" bridge between her early R&B roots and her mid-80s pop dominance. Despite being "lost in the shuffle" commercially compared to her later hits, the album was a critical darling. It won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female in 1984.
