Released in 2005, Consign to Oblivion is the second studio album by the Dutch symphonic metal band Epica. It is widely regarded as a pivotal, if somewhat "safe," transition in the band's discography, moving away from the darker gothic roots of their debut, The Phantom Agony, toward a more cinematic, orchestral soundscape. The album is centered on the Mayan civilization, exploring themes of lost history and nature. It also introduces the "A New Age Dawns" saga, which the band continued in later works like Design Your Universe. Critics frequently highlight the album's soundtrack-like quality. It features heavier use of a full choir and orchestra compared to their debut, though it is notably the only Epica album to lack Middle Eastern musical influences.
