Often hailed as a landmark in symphonic metal, Design Your Universe (2009) is frequently cited by fans and critics alike as the peak of Epica’s career. It marked a major evolution for the band, introducing a heavier, more complex, and progressive sound that balanced cinematic orchestration with aggressive death metal elements. This was the first album to feature lead guitarist Isaac Delahaye and drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek as permanent members. Their background in death metal (both formerly of God Dethroned) brought a "thrashier" edge, including the introduction of technical guitar solos which were previously rare in Epica’s music.
