The 1971 self-titled live album, universally known as Skull & Roses (and originally intended to be titled Skull Fuck), is a pivotal release in the Grateful Dead's discography. It captures the band in a transitional phase, moving from the dense psychedelia of their early years into the country-rock and Americana sound popularized by Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. The recordings feature the classic five-piece lineup of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. The album debuted several songs that became permanent staples of the band's live repertoire, including "Bertha," "Wharf Rat," and "Playing in the Band".
