Propeller is considered the first true classic by Guided by Voices (GBV), originally self-released in 1992 as a intended farewell album before being reissued by Scat Records. Strapped for cash, frontman Robert Pollard and his band famously handcrafted all 500 original vinyl jackets, creating highly sought-after, legendary collector's items. Instead of closing the door on the band, this stellar collection of power-pop hooks, 1960s British Invasion melodies, and raw 4-track cassette experimentation inadvertently launched their career and established the lo-fi slacker rock blueprint.
