John Cale’s 1970 debut solo album, Vintage Violence, is famously a "bait-and-switch" record. Despite the aggressive title and a cover featuring Cale’s face obscured by a glass mask, the music is a collection of accessible, melodic, and often pastoral pop-rock songs—a sharp departure from his avant-garde work with The Velvet Underground. Critics often describe it as a mix of country-rock, Americana, and Beatlesque pop. Rolling Stone’s original 1970 review famously compared it to a "Byrds album produced by Phil Spector who has marinated for six years in burgundy, anise and chili peppers".
