Released on 17 January 1974, Court and Spark is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. It remains her most commercially successful work, marking a pivotal transition from folk to a sophisticated fusion of jazz rock and soft rock. The album reached No. 1 in Canada and No. 2 on the US Billboard 200, eventually achieving double platinum status. Backed by the jazz-fusion group L.A. Express (led by Tom Scott), Mitchell moved away from solo acoustic arrangements toward lush, complex orchestrations. It earned four Grammy nominations and was named the best album of the year in the prestigious Pazz & Jop critics poll for 1974.
