Released in 1975, Joni Mitchell's The Hissing of Summer Lawns is a complex, avant-garde masterpiece that marked a sharp departure from her previous folk-pop success. While initially polarizing for its experimental jazz fusion and shift toward cynical social commentary, it has since been reappraised as one of the most innovative albums of the 20th century. At the time of its release, many critics and fans found the album "pretentious" and "self-indulgent". Rolling Stone famously gave it a harsh review, with critic Stephen Holden calling it a "great collection of pop poems with a distracting soundtrack". Retrospective reviews have hailed it as a "timeless classic". It was ranked at number 258 in Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Joni Mitchell's 1975 album Hissing of Summer Lawns features cover art by Joni Mitchell herself. Mitchell created the cover art for several of her albums also including 'Court and Spark' and 'Clouds'.
