Julian Cope’s Saint Julian (1987) is the definitive turning point where the eccentric English post-punk iconoclast stripped back his insular surrealism to briefly conquer the mainstream as a leather-clad pop-rock god. Following the commercial failure of his first two solo efforts (World Shut Your Mouth and Fried), Cope cleaned up, signed with Island Records, and formed the "Two-Car Garage Band" to deliver an accessible, swaggering, and punchy gem of big-scale garage rock.
