Kali Malone’s Living Torch (2022) is a masterful, deeply immersive 33-minute electroacoustic piece that marks a structural shift in her drone-centric discography. Released via Portraits GRM, the album is famous for a brilliant sonic illusion: despite starting with what sounds like a traditional pipe-organ drone, the record features no pipe organ at all. Instead, Malone intricately weaves together brass, woodwinds, and custom electronics into a dense tapestry of sustained resonance.
