Kevin Ayers' 1969 solo debut, Joy of a Toy, is a cornerstone of the Canterbury Scene, blending whimsical psychedelic pop with avant-garde experimentation. Released after his departure from Soft Machine, the album showcases his characteristic "laissez-faire" charm and deep baritone vocals. The album is defined by its eclectic instrumentation and David Bedford's elaborate arrangements. It features an unusual array of instruments, including oboe, cello, piccolo, trombone, and even a kazoo. Ayers is backed by former Soft Machine bandmates Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, and Hugh Hopper. Notably, a 2003 reissue includes a version of "Singing a Song in the Morning" featuring Syd Barrett on guitar.
