Congotronics (2004) is the acclaimed international debut album by Konono N°1, a musical collective from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The album introduced the world to the band's self-described "tradi-modern" sound—a hypnotic fusion of traditional Bazombo trance music and raw, distorted electronics, known as "Scrapheap Electro." The music is built on three likembés (thumb pianos) electrified using DIY pick-ups fashioned from car parts, such as alternator magnets. Recorded in Kinshasa by producer Vincent Kenis, the album captures a gritty, overdriven aesthetic that resonated with fans of punk, noise, and electronic music.
