Released in 1999, Black Elvis / Lost in Space is Kool Keith’s major-label debut for Ruffhouse Records and is widely considered one of his most polished and commercially accessible projects, despite its surreal subject matter. Keith adopts multiple personas, primarily Black Elvis, an intergalactic rock star, and a traveler Lost in Space. Reviewers often compare his persona-shifting to David Bowie.Production Shift: Unlike the lush, cinematic sound of Dr. Octagonecologyst (produced by Dan the Automator), Keith handled much of the production himself with assistance from KutMasta Kurt. The result is a minimalist, electro-heavy sound full of 808 beats and "menacing organ lines".
